(Sept. 8, 2008) The Australian Communications and Media Authority is undertaking a review of the current Children's Television Standards 2005 and has released a draft set of standards. Australia has mandatory quotas for the number or hours and broadcast times and lengths of children's programs on free-to-air television. The current standards contain a range of restrictions regarding advertising to children, including a ban on advertising during pre-school programs.
The 2008 draft standards include the following proposals:
• Children's and pre-school television programs quotas should be maintained, although more flexibility in how quotas are met could be allowed;
• No general restrictions would be imposed in relation to food and beverage advertising; and
• Advertising restrictions, including restrictions on the number, repetition, and content of advertisements, should be maintained and in some instances increased.
