Booker T. Washington and Tuskegee Institute

My Dear Mr Washington,

. . . . But whether I do or not, count
me in always in any effort to
raise us all, black and white, toward
the ideal you and I both pursue
and will, I hope, to the end. I have
no doubt of you, but sometimes I almost wish
the end were near with me lest I slip and can’t
improve on much I have come to stand for.
Ever yours,
Jacob Riis
