Alexander Hamilton McNeill was clerk of court for Moore County, N.C., and Confederate States enlistment officer and tax assessor for the county.

Ninety-five letters (1863-1865) originating with the Confederate States of America Conscript Bureau and its offices including one letter concerning the conscription of one fifth of all men employed in mining and nitre work into active military service and the transfer of certain men from duties at the C.S.A. arsenal at Fayetteville, N.C., and ninety-four letters of investigation and arrest issued between the end of Dec. 1863 and the end of Feb. 1865 in an effort to recover eighty-one Confederate soldiers, two sailors, and one blacksmith, who were natives of Moore County or who had gone there to escape detection as deserters or as soldiers absent without leave. Also includes 1 v. of accounts (1861-1863) of the Board of Agents for the Volunteer Companies from Moore County, N.C., containing information relating to the boarding, provisioning, and clothing of volunteers and economic support for their families during the Civil War; together with a list of ninety-six marriage licenses issued in Moore County between Aug. 1855 and Feb. 1857. The four volunteer companies covered are Capt. Jesse L. Bryan's Company of Cavalry (Company I, 2nd North Carolina Cavalry), Capt. William P. Martin's Company (Moore County Independents, Company H., 26th North Carolina Regiment), Capt. John M. Kelly's Company (Moore County Scotch Riflemen, Company C, 35th North Carolina Regiment), and Capt. M.W. Swann's Company (Company H, 30th North Carolina Regiment).
