Background
Robert Gween was a Confederate expatriate living in England. Gween's letter was written shortly after the resolution of the Trent Affair incident involving the doctrine of freedom of the seas which nearly precipitated war between Great Britain and the United States.
Contents
Gween writes to his son, reporting on the expected arrival of the Confederate envoys James Mason and John Slidell and European feelings toward the Confederacy.
