The Library of Congress will launch Library of Congress Medium of Performance Thesaurus for Music (LCMPT) on February 24, 2014 when it approves approximately 800 terms that have been agreed upon by the Music Library Association’s Bibliographic Control Committee, Subject Access Subcommittee, and the Library of Congress. LCMPT is a stand-alone vocabulary that provides terminology to describe the instruments, voices, etc., used in the performance of musical works.
The terms will be available for assignment in both bibliographic records and authority records for works and expressions on February 25, 2014.
Information on searching and acquiring the authority records, making proposals for new and revised terms, and assigning the terms is provided below. For general information on the structure and purpose of the vocabulary, see the announcement entitled “Library of Congress Releases Tentative List of Medium of Performance Terms for Music,” available at http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/medprf-list.html.
All of the valid LCMPT terms will appear as a separate database in Classification Web, LC’s web-based subscription service, on February 25, 2014. There will be a separate menu option to access them, and they may be searched, browsed, and viewed using the familiar Classification Web interface.
Full MARC 21 authority records in MARC UTF-8 format will be freely provided for downloading from http://classificationweb.net/LCMPT/. Two files will be posted each month. One file will be cumulative and consist of all of the records that are valid at the time the file is created (i.e., it will be a “snapshot” of the database). The other will consist only of the records that have been added, revised, or cancelled since the last time a file was created. New files will be posted monthly. The structure of the file names and information about downloading the files is provided at http://classificationweb.net/LCMPT/.
Sometime after February 25, 2014, the records will also be made available on the Library’s Authorities & Vocabularies website (http://id.loc.gov), where they may be downloaded in a variety of formats.
LCMPT authority records will not be distributed through the Cataloging Distribution Service’s MARC Distribution Service (MDS), nor will they appear in LC’s ILS or LC’s authorities website, http://authorities.loc.gov.
Proposals for New and Revised Terms
All SACO proposals for new and revised medium of performance terms should be submitted through the SACO Music Funnel. Information on the funnel may be found at http://www.loc.gov/aba/pcc/saco/Music_Funnel.html.
Assigning Terms from LCMPT
Authorized LC medium of performance terms are intended to be assigned in field 382 of MARC 21 bibliographic records and authority records for works and expressions. They may be assigned in both AACR2 and RDA records. Best practices for recording the mediums of performance in field 382 are provided in the Descriptive Cataloging Manual, and are also available on the Program for Cooperative Cataloging’s web site at http://www.loc.gov/aba/pcc/rda/PCC%20RDA%20guidelines/Z01%20382%202014feb.pdf. The best practices were a collaborative effort of the Library of Congress, the Music Library Association’s Bibliographic Control Committee, and the International Association of Music Libraries, and may be refined if necessary for the LCMPT environment.
At this time, there is no change in the policies regarding the assignment of Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH). Subject headings should continue to be assigned to musical works according to the policies contained in the Subject Headings Manual.
