The current ALA-LC romanization table for Japanese has been implemented inconsistently due to conflicting guidance from the Library of Congress (LC). The attached proposal [PDF, 129 KB] clarifies which diacritical marks to use and when to use them when romanizing Japanese from the vernacular. Also attached is what the revised Japanese romanization table [PDF, 345 KB] would look like with clearer instructions about diacritical marks added.
Comments on this clarification of LC practice should be sent to Bruce Johnson in LC’s Policy and Standards Division (firstname.lastname@example.org) no later than January 22, 2012.
