Jerry Pinkney, who took an interest in drawing at a very early age, has illustrated more than 100 books for children since 1964. The recipient of multiple Caldecott Honor Medals and Coretta Scott King Awards and Honors, he has taught illustration and conducted workshops at universities across the country, created art for the U.S. Postal Services’ Black Heritage stamps and had more than 20 one-man retrospective shows at major U.S. venues. He also created the artwork for the 2005 National Book Festival poster. His most recent book for children is The Lion and the Mouse, a wordless adaptation of one of Aesop’s most beloved fables. Pinkney lives in New York.
