Journalist and novelist Judith Martin worked at The Washington Post for 25 years, covering social events at the White House and the embassies, before becoming a theater and drama critic. In 1978, she created the “Miss Manners” column now nationally syndicated in newspapers and on the Internet. She has written 12 Miss Manners books, a history of American manners, and two novels. Her most recent publication, No Vulgar Hotel/The Desire and Pursuit of Venice (W. W. Norton, 2007), is her first travel book. The recipient of the 2005 National Humanities Medal, she lives in Washington, D.C.
