As a fourth grader, Khaled Hosseini was already reading Persian poetry as well as Farsi translations of novels ranging from Alice in Wonderland to Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer series. His debut novel, The Kite Runner (Penguin, 2003), has stayed on best-seller, book club and community-wide reading lists since its publication. In one of the first Afghan novels to be written in English, he draws on his personal experiences as a child in Afghanistan. He is now a physician living in California.
