Gail Godwin
Gail Godwin is the author of 10 novels, two collections of stories and a work of nonfiction, Heart: A Personal Journey Through Its Myths and Meanings (William Morrow, 2001), in which she reflects on her writing experience. Three of her novels, The Odd Woman, A Mother and Two Daughters and Violet Clay, were nominated for the National Book Award. A Southern Family (1987) won both the Janet Heidiger Kafka Award from the University of Rochester and the Thomas Wolfe Memorial Literary Award, which is endowed by the Lipinsky Foundation and presented by the Western Carolina Historical Association. She is also the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, National Endowment grants for both fiction and libretto writing, and the Award in Literature from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. Her most recent novel, Evensong (Ballantine,1999), is a sequel to Father Melancholy's Daughter (1991).
