Author Biography

Liz Carpenter

Liz Carpenter, who was Lady Bird Johnson's press secretary and chief of staff during the Johnson administration, is the prolific author of articles and books, including the best-seller Ruffles and Flourishes (1993), about her days in the White House. Her most recent publication is Start with a Laugh: An Insider's Guide to Roasts, Toasts, Eulogies, and Other Speeches (Eakin Press, 2000). A distinguished lectureship has been named after her at the University of Texas, her alma mater, and she is a member of the Texas Women's Hall of Fame. When not on the lecture circuit, she lives at her home, Grass Roots, in the hills overlooking Austin, Texas.
