In January 1990, the Library of Congress established a Cooperative Acquisitions Program in the Rio de Janeiro Office to acquire Brazilian serials for participating libraries. The acquisition of Brazilian serials and the claiming of missing issues has always been difficult and challenging. This Brazil-based service, drawing upon the more than forty years of acquisitions experience of the Rio de Janeiro Office, solves the problem for many libraries. This program offers subscriptions and claiming services for some 200 serial titles--scholarly journals, newspapers, and magazines--in the areas of political science, social sciences, language, literature, business administration, education, science, history, culture, and law.
In 1999, the office began offering to participants a selection of music compact discs. Types of music covered include popular Brazilian music, folk (Indian, sertanejo, etc.), and classical. For a set price LC will ship to participants a selection of 15 to 80 CDs once per year. LC Rio librarians will select only the very best titles available based on a variety of reviewing sources. Items will not be subject to return.
The other package offered by the office to participants since Fiscal Year 2012, is the Brazilian chapbooks, called Literatura de Cordel. The package contains from 70 to 80 items acquired in different sources from different states in Brazil. The titles tend to reflect important events happening in Brazil and in the world during the current year.
An annual list of serials is prepared by the Rio Office and mailed to the participants in May. Subscriptions are supplied on an annual, calendar year basis.

The list provides the annual subscription cost estimate for each title. Added to the cost estimate for each subscription is an administrative charge for overhead cost and postage fees. Serials issues are shipped from Rio monthly or bi-monthly; packages of CDs and Cordel are shipped once a year, by air, to the continental U.S. and international destinations. Each shipment includes a packing list. It is requested that automated serials claiming systems be set at six to eight weeks after the issue date to avoid unnecessary claims.
