PSD policy specialist responsible for this list: L. Dechman

CLASSIFICATION

B128.S86-.S864

The subject headings indicate that the work is criticism of Chinese literature, which should class in PL. The proposal was not necessary.

BJ1286.C68

This proposal may be resubmitted with a resubmitted subject proposal. See below under Etiquette—Religious aspects—Judaism; Courtesy—Religious aspects—Judaism for details.

DK265.8.E43

The first subject heading on the work is Legie ruská, so it should class in DK265.23.A-Z. If the work really is primarily about Ekaterinburg, then the subject headings should be revised and the proposal may be resubmitted.

DR67.T67

This proposal was not approved because the subject proposal was not approved. See below under Torlaks for details. The work being cataloged is about Bulgarians in Serbia for which the number DR1954.B84 already exists.

HV548

The work being cataloged is about human security, including terrorism, freedom, protectionism vs. biosecurity, national security, and crime, in a human rights context rather than from the social pathology point of view. The work discusses those topics in a national/state and international context. As such, the meeting feels that the work would be better classified with human rights in JC, perhaps JC576. The proposal may be resubmitted.

PJ9131

This proposal sought to change the table that is used for subarrangement, but the two tables are not interchangeable.  Table P-PZ15 is for languages with one number and Table P-PZ15a is for languages with successive decimal numbers.  If the table were changed, the works already classified in the number could not be interfiled with new works. The work being cataloged should be classed in PJ9131.Z77, the number for individual texts in Tigré. The proposal was not approved.

PL248.M8825

LC has cataloged the work as a biography of a Muslim scholar and also a manuscript by that scholar, which is classed in BP88.A-Z. Only belles lettres by an author, works about an author’s literary works, or biographical works about a literary author, are classed in the P schedules.  The proposal was not necessary.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Announcement

Named collections

A named collection is a collection of objects that is formally named, such as the Seuso Treasure (on this list), which is a collection of Roman silver. According to SHM H 405 Group 1, named collections are established in the name authority file.

H 405 also includes “Collections, Public and Private” in Group 2. Listing collections in both Group 1 and Group 2 has caused confusion, so the meeting decided to clarify the situation by removing the entry “Collections, Public and Private” from the Group 2 list and revising H 1427, Collections of Objects. Unnamed collections (such as Harvard University—Coin collections and Bronzes—Private collections) will still be established as necessary in the subject file.

A survey of the database has revealed several headings for named collections are established as subjects, and they will be cancelled and established in names. Other subject headings for named collections may be identified in the future, at which time they may also be cancelled and established in names.

Other decisions:

Activity trackers

The cataloger did not provide a definition of the term in the 670s, and no source was provided for the information given in the scope note.

In addition, multiple sources were cited in a single 670 field. The cataloger should provide a single source in each 670 field. Information recorded in the 670 fields is retained to define, describe, and give context to the subject heading, so the information should be presented clearly and unambiguously for the benefit of future researchers. (See H 200-H 203 for instructions.) The RT provided in the proposal should be a BT (see H 370).

Finally, the meeting recommended adding another BT Health—Monitoring—Equipment and supplies.

The proposal may be resubmitted.

Autobiographical fiction, Bulgarian

The information provided in English, “Socialism: memory and story: the novel and memoir about the recent past,” does not justify the phrase autobiographical fiction in the proposed heading.  In addition, the language of the title does not necessarily indicate the language of the literature being discussed. So, the form of the literature (autobiographical fiction) and the language of the literature (Bulgarian) must be specifically identified in English in the citation for the work being cataloged. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Çekirge Hamamı (Bursa, Turkey)

There was no information provided in the proposal in English that explicitly supported the choice of BT. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Chaussade family

The cataloger should provide the name as it would be expressed in English and the location of the family. Identifying the location of the family is necessary to determine if the name was altered due to emigration (see H 1631 sec. 3.a). The proposal may be resubmitted.

Chibcha cooking

The proposal stated that the work being cataloged was about cooking from the “Muiscan community of Suba,” but did not provide an explanation that this is Chibcha. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Chief Osceola (Mascot)

There are several proposals for mascots on this list. Universities and professional sports teams change names and sometimes locations, which would lead to maintenance problems if the corporate names and locations were included in the body of the record.  In addition, the UFs in some of the proposals are gratuitous.

Since most of them are not clear forename-surname situations, the heading should be in direct order, qualified by (Mascot).  There should be an inverted reference to bring the second part of the name (if there is one) into the initial position. A UF for a “short” form of name should be not be included, if an inverted UF begins with the same word.  The BT should be Mascots, unsubdivided, as was originally decided on the heading for Chief Osceola in 2010.

The proposal for Chief Osceola (Mascot) was not approved. The other mascot proposals on this list were revised to conform to this policy.

Coconut Island (Qld.)

The Wikipedia citation in the proposal states that Coconut Island is a town, which would require that it should be established in the NAF, not in LCSH.  The language used in Wikipedia is often imprecise, so, the cataloger should provide information to prove or disprove the assertion that Coconut Island is a jurisdiction. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Derechinsky family

The proposal contained no information from the work being cataloged about the location and nationality of the family. This requirement was added to the instruction sheet because, if no location information is included, it is impossible to determine if the name was altered due to emigration (see H 1631 sec. 3.a). The proposal may be resubmitted.

Electorate

The title of the work being cataloged translates to, “Profile of the Peruvian electorate.” The cataloger did not provide any information showing that existing headings that have been successfully applied to other resources about “the electorate” are not sufficient (e.g., Political participation, Political psychology, Political culture, Voting, or Elections). Was the work cataloged by its title?

Furthermore, the UFs make it look as though the heading would be a class of persons, but the BT proposed makes it look like a concept.  The meeting was concerned that the heading would be misused if it was intended to be a concept rather than a class of persons.

The proposal may be resubmitted.

Etiquette—Religious aspects—Judaism; Courtesy—Religious aspects—Judaism

The same work was cited for each of these proposals, and the title “Manners matter” was all that was provided in support of them.  The cataloger needs to provide information showing how the work relates to the proposed headings. In addition, the base [topic]—Religious aspects heading needs to be proposed for each.

Alternatively, the cataloger might consider assigning the existing heading Jewish etiquette.

The proposal may be resubmitted.

Federal Medical Assistance Percentage

The Federal government's share of most Medicaid service costs is determined by the FMAP rate. Works about Federal funding of various assistance programs have been entered under headings such as Medicaid—Finance, Health insurance—United States—Finance, and similar headings with the subdivision –Finance. The meeting felt that the proposed heading was too narrow for LCSH. The proposal was not approved.

Folk poetry, Berber; Dialect poetry, Berber

The English translation of the title, “texts of wedding songs” does not support either concept (folk poetry, dialect poetry) or the qualifier (Berber). The proposals may be resubmitted.

Foreign-law bonds

There was no definition provided in the proposal for the term chosen for the heading. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Furth family

The proposal included no indication of the family’s location, which is necessary for identifying whether the name was changed due to emigration (see H 1631 sec. 3.a). Also, the cataloger should consider the relationship to the existing heading Firth family (see H 1631 sec. 3.c). The proposal may be resubmitted.

Gājana (Hindu festival)

The classification number that was included on this proposal in the 053 field must be proposed. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Hugo and Brigitte Eppich House (West Vancouver, B.C.)

There needs to be another UF, Eppich House, per H 1334, which needs to be qualified by the street name because there is another Eppich House in West Vancouver. This proposal may be resubmitted with a proposal for the street on which the house is located.

Jakubowicz family

The proposal did not cite a specific work being cataloged, which is required (see H 195). Reference to the fact that the name was found in Holocaust records is not sufficient. Also, the proposal included no indication of the family’s location, which is necessary for identifying whether the name was changed in the records due to relocation (see H 1631 sec. 3.a).

Kaska language

Ethnologue is a standard reference source for languages but it was not cited. The Ethnologue entry for Kaska includes several variant names. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Kyrgyzstan—History—February Revolution, 1917

The fact that there were two revolutions in Kyrgyzstan in 1917 does not support the heading actually being proposed.  Citing another eading as a pattern for the subdivision --February Revolution, 1917 does not support this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Lenggong Valley (Perak, Malaysia)

The 670s indicate that the Lenggong Valley is the valley of the Perak River, which has not been established.  H 800 requires that the river should be established if the valley is going to be established. A proposal for the river should be resubmitted along with this proposal for the valley.

Linoleum block-printing, Israeli

The proposal lacks any information in English that describes the relation of the heading being proposed to the work being cataloged. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Marionettists

The existing heading Puppeteers has been used for biographies and other works about puppeteers who manipulate marionettes. Since many marionettists also use other types of puppets, it would be difficult or impossible to separate the file. UFs from this proposal will be added to Puppeteers to lead users to that heading. The proposal was not approved.

Moguex language

The citation in Ethnologue indicates that this heading should probably be changed to Guambiano language. Also, Ethnologue provides several variants for which UFs should be added.

If the language heading is changed, the cataloger should also consider changing the heading Moguex Indians and the derivative headings, Moguex mythology and Moguex textile fabrics.

The proposal may be resubmitted.

Navalism

Navalism is the early 20th century belief that sea power was necessary for national greatness.  LC has only six books that include the word “navalism” in the title, and four have the heading Sea-power.  The Dutch title of the work cited in the proposal translates to, “The Influence of International Naval Strategies on Dutch Sea Strategy for the Defense of the Dutch East Indies, 1912-1942.” Based on the abstract, the meeting recommended assigning the headings:

                        Sea-power—Netherlands.
                        Naval strategy—Netherlands.
                        World War, 1914-1918—Naval operations, Dutch.
                        World War, 1939-1945—Naval operations, Dutch.
                        World War, 1939-1945—Naval operations—Submarine.
                        Netherlands. Koninklijke Marine.

The proposal was not necessary.

Older people

The Summary of Decisions for List 1204 said, “The proposed UF Elderly is covered by the existing UF Elderly people. The proposed UF Elders (Older people) may be misconstrued to refer to tribal, church, or other elders, who may be older than the general membership. The proposal was not approved.”

This proposal also proposed to add Elderly and Elders (Older people) as UFs.  In addition, it proposed Elderlies as a UF.  While Merriam-Webster says that elderlies is an acceptable plural for elderly, OED and Collins do not.  That fact, in conjunction with the fact that “elderlies” is clearly not in common usage, argues against including it as a UF.  The proposal was not approved.

Palacio de Jabalquinto (Baeza, Spain)

There is an alternate spelling “Palacio de Jabalkinto” in the citation for the work being cataloged, but no UF was provided. The meeting could not determine if the citation contained a misspelling or typo, or, if the alternate spelling should be in a UF. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Perl family

The proposal included no indication of the family’s location, which is necessary for identifying whether the name was changed due to emigration (see H 1631 sec. 3.a). Also, the cataloger should consider the relationship to the existing heading Pearl family (see H 1631 sec. 3.c). The proposal may be resubmitted.

Pinus oocarpa—Tapping

This heading represents tapping of a single species of tree. The existing heading Tree tapping has been used only one time in LC’s atalog. Tree tapping has one narrower term, Sugar maple—Tapping, which has been used 19 times in LC’s catalog.

The meeting generally does not encourage establishing single-species headings. But, clearly the tapping of sugar maple trees is the most common situation (at least the most common situation to write books about). The heading Sugar maple—Tapping will be retained exceptionally. For any other type of tree, the meeting recommended assigning a heading for the tree species postcoordinated with the heading, Tree tapping. The proposal was not approved.

Poets, Kabyle

The proposal did not provide information in English that explains the relationship of the work to the heading being proposed. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Revolutionary poetry, Panjabi

The proposal did not provide information in English that explains the relationship of the work to the heading being proposed. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Seraniẏābāta family

The proposal contained no information from the work being cataloged about the location of the family. This requirement was added to the instruction sheet because, if no location information is included, it is impossible to determine if the name was altered due to emigration (see H 1631 sec. 3.a). The proposal may be resubmitted.

Seuso Treasure (Budapest, Hungary)

This proposal is for a named collection of Roman silver, which should be established in the NAF (see announcement above). The proposal was not approved.

Short stories, Beninese (French)

The source citation identifies the work as “short stories written by Beninese authors,” but that statement does not support the language qualifier. The language of the work being cataloged does not necessarily reflect the language of the literature being examined in the work, therefore, the language must be identified explicitly. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Shuksan, Mount (Wash.)

There was no citation to the work being cataloged as required in H 195. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Social economy

The cataloger did not provide any information from the resource to show how the author defines “social economy.” The two sources cited in the proposal agree with each other to some extent on the definition, but three sources (“Poverty: An International Glossary,” “The Dictionary of Alternatives,” and the “Cambridge Dictionary of Sociology”) that the meeting reviewed do not agree.  None of these sources indicate that the social economy consists of “voluntary rather than paid activities,” as the first citation in the proposal does.  Given the divergent definitions, the cataloger should provide information about how the work being cataloged defines social economy.

In “Poverty: An International Glossary,” the definition suggests social economy may be closer to concepts covered by existing LCSH headings such as Informal sector (Economics); Subsistence economy; Mixed economy; and Community development. The cataloger should do more research to determine how the existing headings listed above are related to the proposal.

The proposal may be resubmitted. The meeting also requested that a scope note be added to the proposal if it is resubmitted.

Squalicum Creek (Wash.)

There was no citation to a work being cataloged as required in H 195. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Torlaks

While there does seem to be some evidence that Bulgarians in Serbia really are called Torlaks, one of the reference sources cited in the proposal clearly states that the word is pejorative. The heading Bulgarians—Serbia should be assigned instead. The proposal was not approved.

Travelers’ writings, Algerian

The language of the travelers’ writings being discussed was not provided.  However, if the language of the title is indicative, then the correct heading would be Travelers’ writings, Arabic—Algeria.  If the work is not about Arabic travelers’ writings, then the proposal may be resubmitted with information about the scope of the work.

Travelers’ writings, Moroccan

The language of the travelers’ writings being discussed was not provided.  However, if the language of the title is indicative, then the correct heading would be Travelers’ writings, Arabic—Morocco. If the work is not about Arabic travelers’ writings, then the proposal may be resubmitted with information about the scope of the work.

Trương family

The proposal contained no information in English from the work being cataloged about the location of the family. If no location information is included, it is impossible to determine if the name was altered due to emigration (see H 1631 sec. 3.a). The Wikipedia citation that identified the surname as Vietnamese is not sufficient. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Verse drama, Urdu

Only the Urdu-language title of the work being cataloged was provided to support this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the work to the heading being proposed.

Wake Forest Innovation Quarter (Winston, Salem, N.C.)

H 405 specifically states that research parks are in Group 1 names. The heading should be established in the name authority file. The proposal was not approved.

Wani family; Ōmiwa family

The proposals contained no information in English from the works being cataloged about the location of the families. If no location information is included, it is impossible to determine if the names were altered due to emigration (see H 1631 sec. 3.a). The proposals may be resubmitted.

GENRE/FORM TERMS

Chamber symphonies

The term being proposed represents a medium of performance, not a genre. The proposal was not approved.

Television game shows

The revisions on this proposal were evaluated as follows. The first proposed UF was too broad (particularly in light of the other proposals on this list). The second proposed UF was redundant and formatted incorrectly. The third and fourth proposed UFs were too broad. The meeting preferred to keep the broader term at the broader level. The existing contrasting scope note was retained. The proposal was not approved.

MEDIUM OF PERFORMANCETERMS

garklein recorder

The UF piccolo recorder was not supported. The citation to the work being cataloged says that the work is for “piccolo or garklein recorder.”  The piccolo is a separate instrument.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

vocal percussion

There was no citation to a work being cataloged.  Moreover, Beatboxing is established as a genre/form term. When the term vocal percussion was created in LCMPT, the decision was that Beatboxing was the genre, vocal percussion the instrument. While the two terms do seem to be used as synonymously at times, "beatboxing" describes an action rather than medium of performance.

If the cataloger wants to have beatboxing in LCMPT, the relationship between vocal percussion and beatboxing needs to be reexamined. The meeting was reluctant to establish beatboxing as both a medium of performance and a form.  The proposal may be resubmitted if desired.
