CLASSIFICATION

PL991.2.T65

The name heading, Chŏng, Tŏk-hwa, 1906-1987, should be established in the Name Authority File before it can be added to the classification schedule. The proposal may be resubmitted.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Announcement:

Multiple subdivisions

The Summary of Decisions for List 1806 (June 2018) announced that multiple subdivisions would be cancelled from LCSH beginning this fall.  The announcement stated in part,

Catalogers should continue to use existing multiple subdivisions as usual until PSD creates individual subject authority records for each heading string that has been assigned.  The multiple subdivision will then be cancelled and catalogers must propose each new use of a subdivision that was formerly authorized by a multiple.

Several proposals on the current list have been submitted for unique strings based on existing multiples. PSD requests that the instructions quoted above be followed. Existing multiple subdivision records should continue to be applied as usual until the existing multiple is cancelled. The cancellation process becomes unnecessarily complicated if proposals are submitted for strings based on existing multiples. Catalogers should refrain from submitting proposals for them. Proposals for strings that have not heretofore been authorized by multiples may be proposed as unique strings.

Example 1

Do not submit a proposal until after the project to cancel multiples is completed.

Existing multiple:       Anxiety—Religious aspects—Buddhism, [Christianity, etc.]
Heading needed:         Anxiety—Religious aspects—Islam.

Example 2

A proposal should be submitted.

Existing heading:        Homicide—Religious aspects.
Heading needed:         Homicide—Religious aspects—Buddhism.

[A multiple in the form Homicide—Religious aspects—Buddhism, [Christianity, etc.] does not exist. Submit a proposal for the heading Homicide—Religious aspects—Buddhism.]

These instructions remain in force until the end of the project, and they need to be followed. This project to cancel the multiple subdivisions is a massive undertaking and requires that everyone understand and follow the instructions, in order to avoid duplicate authority records, etc. Please contact PSD if you are unsure how to proceed.

Other decisions:

Assyro-Babylonian literature—Translations into English; Sumerian literature—Translations into English

The subdivision is free-floating under names of literatures (H 1156). These proposals were not necessary.

Bartonia paniculata ssp. paniculata

According to H 1332 sec. 1, a heading for the common name of a subspecies may be established if the subspecies is well-known. Section 2 of the same instruction sheet says that the common name must be in popular use and unambiguous. Since there are two recognized common names for this subspecies, the heading for the species should be assigned instead. The proposal was not approved.

Cae Hir Gardens (Wales)

This garden is in Cribyn, a populated place, according to information provided in the 670.  The heading has to be qualified by that place (H 810 sec. 1.a(2)), but the place has to be established in the NAF first. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Coal mine subsidences

The Summary of Decisions for List 1706 stated: “It is unclear how a coal mine subsidence would differ from the subsidence of any other type of underground mine, and therefore the headings Coal mines and mining and Mine subsidences should be assigned to the work being cataloged. If there is indeed a difference, the proposal may be resubmitted with source citations supporting that fact.”

The resubmitted proposal provided more detailed information about the nature of coal mine subsidences, but nothing about how they are unique from other types of underground mine subsidences. As stated originally, a heading for the type of mine (in this case, Coal mines and mining) may be assigned along with the heading Mine subsidences. The proposal was not approved.

Disney princess films

The meeting does not wish to begin a pattern of setting up forms of movies based on the name of a corporate body and theme. The cataloger should use Princesses in motion pictures along with the name heading for the Walt Disney Company. The proposal was not approved.

Erotic stories, Kurdish

The proposal indicates that the work is “quotations and anecdotes of [an] erotic nature.” That description does not immediately indicate that the stories are belles lettristic. Are the stories fictional? Or are they anecdotes? If they are quotations and anecdotes, then the work should be assigned [topic]—Quotations, maxims, etc. and [topic]—Anecdotes. Perhaps the topic could be Sex or Sexual excitement. The heading Erotica could also be assigned. The cataloger should clarify whether the contents of the work are fictional stories or quotations and anecdotes. The proposal may be resubmitted if necessary.

Gagau Mountain (Malaysia)

H 810 sec. 4 specifically says that features in two or more jurisdictions should not be qualified. This mountain is in three ADM1s of Malaysia, and in LCSH features in Malaysia are qualified by the ADM1s. The existing heading is correct as it is. The proposal to change the heading was not approved.

Gas flow; Natural gas—Migration

The change of the existing heading Gases—Migration to Gas migration was not approved; and a UF for Gas migration will be added to that heading. The BTs on these headings will remain unchanged. The proposals were not approved.

Germany—History—19th century

Not approved.  The current heading is Germany—History—1789-1900, which reflects “the long 19th century” in European history. LCSH contains headings that have used these dates for several other countries. There is a UF for the standard century subdivision. The meeting chose to continue to use the dates for “the long 19th century.” The proposal was not approved.

Germany—Politics and government—1789-1900; Germany—Politics and government—19th century

Since there is a clear pattern in LCSH (there are several other headings with the 1789-1900 chronological subdivision for which this change was not proposed), the proposed change is reversed. Instead of cancelling 1789-1900 in favor of 19th century, for these headings 19th century was cancelled in favor of 1789-1900. A UF for Germany—Politics and government—19th century has been added to the heading Germany—Politics and government—1789-1900.

Holiness—Judaism

Catalogers should continue to use multiples where they exist. (See the announcement above.) PSD appreciates the intention of catalogers to “help” with the project, but the project to cancel the multiple subdivisions will be hindered significantly by making proposals for headings that are covered by existing multiples. The multiple Holiness—Buddhism, [Christianity, etc.] covers this proposed heading. The proposal was not necessary.

Self-cannibalism

This proposal was supported only by a citation to the museum catalog. The proposal should contain a citation to a particular work held by the museum of which at least 20% is about self-cannibalism. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Moderation—Religious aspects—Islam

Catalogers should continue to use multiples where they exist. (See the announcement above.) PSD appreciates the intention of catalogers to “help” with the project, but the project to cancel the multiple subdivisions will be hindered significantly by making proposals for headings that are covered by existing multiples. The multiple Moderation—Religious aspects--Buddhism, [Christianity, etc.] covers this proposed heading. The proposal was not necessary.

Moskovskiĭ gosudarstvennyĭ Kamernyĭ teatr (Moscow, Russia)

Theaters are in H 405 Group 2 (headings to be established as subjects), and may be put into Group 1 (headings to be established as names), if they are needed as descriptive access points. There is no evidence that that is the case for this theater. There is no 667 field in the name authority record indicating that it is an SHM/RDA situation, and the heading is not used as a descriptive access point in LC’s catalog, or in the catalog of the proposing library. The proposal was not approved.

Pul-i Āqʹqalʻah (Gulistān, Iran)

According to H 1334 sec. 3.e, this bridge, which is in Āq Qalā, Iran, should be qualified by that city. The city should be established in the NAF before it can be used as a qualifier. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Romances, Turkmen

No English was provided. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the proposal to the work being cataloged.

Stuyvesant-Fish House (New York, N.Y. : Stuyvesant Street)

The information about the conflict that appears in the 952 field needs to be properly cited and appear in a 670 or 675 field, so that the information is retained and is publically accessible. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Stuyvesant Street (New York, N.Y.)

This proposal should be resubmitted with the proposal for the Stuyvesant-Fish House.

GENRE/FORM TERMS

Lesson plans

The proposal provides usage, but not a definition or description of the term. A definition or description of the term is necessary to explain the term, even if the term is one that is very familiar to many people. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Restaurant cookbooks

The only difference between a “restaurant cookbook” and a “regular?” cookbook is the provenance of the recipes. LCSH already includes Community cookbooks and Literary cookbooks, but those are different. Part of the definition of genre/form is the purpose of the work, and community cookbooks are almost always fundraisers for one organization or another. Literary cookbooks typically contain excerpts from the fiction in which the character who “authored” the cookbook is featured. However, restaurant cookbooks are just compiled or “branded” with the name of the restaurant. The proposal was not approved.

Short story comics

The intent of this proposal was to establish a term for graphic novels that are shorter than novels.  “Graphic novels” is already a misnomer, because it applies to fiction and nonfiction, and is used for works that in no way resemble what would be recognized as a novel. LCGFT includes the term Novellas, but there is a UF Graphic novellas SEE Graphic novels. The meeting chose to apply the same approach with “short story comics.” LCGFT has a term Short stories, but UFs Short story comics, Graphic short stories, and Short graphic novels, were added to Graphic novels. The proposal was not approved.

MEDIUM OF PERFORMANCETERMS

Changes were made as indicated on the approved list.
