Back to Summary of Decisions

August 21, 2017

PSD policy specialist responsible for this list: J. Young

CLASSIFICATION

BX4551.4

The proposal was made to add the Zgromadzenie Sióstr Jezusa Miłosiernego to the list of individual religious orders of women. A number for the order already exists at BX4332.45 under the Congregation of the Sisters of the Merciful Jesus, its authorized name. The proposal was not necessary.

PG3933.O64

The proposed number would represent a general collection of Ukrainian literature about Operation Vistula. The work being cataloged is a collection of poetry written in both Ukrainian and Polish by a single author. It should be classed with the author’s literary author number. The proposal was not necessary.

PL793.3

The literary author number for Baisa-ō is PL795.B37. The proposal was not necessary.

Other decisions:

Boycott, divestment, and sanctions movement

This proposal was originally submitted on Tentative List 5 (2017). The Summary of Decisions for that list stated that the proposal did not include a citation supporting the scope note and that the broader terms needed to be reconsidered. The scope note and several broader terms were deleted from the resubmitted proposal, but a definition or description of the movement was not provided in the resubmitted proposal. SHM H 202 describes the research necessary for new concepts entering LCSH. The proposal may be resubmitted again.

Brandenburg-Schwedt, House of

According to H 1574, headings in the form [name of house], House of, are reserved for the ruling families of monarchies; Brandenburg-Schwedt was not a ruling family. The meeting recommends that a standard reference source on the German nobility, such as the Brockhaus Enzyklopädie, be examined to determine whether the family held the title of duke, count, or earl. If it did, then the provisions of H 1574 should be followed. If not, then a proposal for Brandenburg-Schwedt family may be proposed according to the guidelines in H 1631. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Cane Creek (Alamance County and Orange County, N.C.)

The resource being cataloged is a recipe book, and it is unusual to base a collection of recipes around a body of water. The meeting wonders whether the recipes might have been collected in the Township of Cane Creek instead. If so, then the township should be established in the name authority file. If the work being cataloged is indeed based around the stream called Cane Creek, the proposal may be resubmitted with a summary of the work provided in the citations. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Characters and characteristics in music; Travel in popular music

This list included a proposal to cancel the existing general see reference Characters and characteristics in music and establish the phrase as an approved heading in its place. The proposal for the heading included a reference stating, “SA subdivision Characters under headings for dramatic musical compositions, e.g., Operas—Characters.”

The proposal to authorize Characters and characteristics in music as a heading was approved, but the see also reference was not. Instead, the heading Characters and characteristics in opera was added to the list and approved, and it should be assigned instead of Operas—Characters. For other forms of music, the heading Characters and characteristics in music should be post-coordinated with the topical heading for the form, e.g., Jukebox musicals.

A separate but related proposal for the heading Travel in popular music appeared on the list. In accordance with the decision to prefer headings in the form [topic] in music, the proposal was not approved. The existing headings Travel in music and Popular music should be assigned to the work being cataloged. Proposals to cancel five existing headings in the form [topic] in popular music will appear on a future Tentative List.

Smooth snake

This proposal was resubmitted to provide the name of the genus as a broader term. The BTs that were originally chosen represented multiple levels of the species-genus-family-order hierarchy.  According to H 1332, the broader term assigned to the heading should represent only the next broader level in the hierarchy. Therefore, the only broader term on the proposal for the species should be the name of the genus Coronella.

In the process of researching the proposed heading again, the meeting discovered that the common name, smooth snake, is used for two separate genera, Coronella and Gongylosoma (see Encyclopedia of Life (EoL), http://eol.org). The proposed heading should be changed per the instructions in H 1332, and a citation recording the research conducted should be added to the proposal. The meeting recommends that the scientific name Coronella austriaca should be proposed as the heading to avoid any ambiguity.

The proposal may be resubmitted.

Coronella

The broader term on this proposal should represent the next broader level in the species-genus-family-order hierarchy. The genus Coronella is in the family Colubridae, which should be the only broader term for Coronella. A citation from an authoritative source such as EoL (http://eol.org) should be included in the proposal to validate the choice of broader term.

However, as mentioned above in the decision for Smooth snake, the meeting’s further research in EoL revealed that “smooth snakes” is the common name of two genera, Coronella and Gongylosoma. Therefore, the choice of heading in this proposal should be Coronella, with a UF Smooth snakes. Also, the EoL citation should include the information that smooth snakes is the common name of two genera.

The proposal may be resubmitted.

Curzon Street Station (Birmingham, England)

The proposal that originally appeared on List 4 (2017) did not include a justification for the use of the broader term Railroad stationsEngland. The citation that was added to justify the broader term was recorded only as a Google search. The specific website that was consulted should be cited instead. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Environmental history

This proposal was made to establish the free-floating subdivision –Environmental conditions—History. The subdivision –Environmental conditions is inherently historical and cannot be subdivided by –History. The subdivision –Environmental conditions will be added to the list of subdivisions that cannot be subdivided by –History in H 1647. The proposal was not approved.

Balkan peoples

This proposal was made to change the heading Ethnology—Balkan Peninsula to Balkan peoples, which are not equivalent concepts. According to H 1919.5, headings in the form Ethnology—[place] are broader terms for nationality headings (e.g., Polish people has the BT Ethnology—Poland).  Balkan peoples is equivalent to a nationality heading.

It was clear from the information provided in the citation for the work being cataloged that the heading Balkan peoples was needed, so the meeting made a substitute proposal for Balkan peoples with the BT Ethnology—Balkan Peninsula. Per H 1919.5, the new heading should be used only for works about people from the Balkan Peninsula who live in another location.

The proposal to revise the heading Ethnology—Balkan Peninsula to Balkan peoples was not approved.

Albanians; Dinaric race; Gagauz (Turkic people); Gorani (European people); Greeks; Illyrians; Pecheneg (Turkic people); Romanians

These proposals were made to revise BTs on the existing headings. The proposals for the Dinaric race, Gaguz, Gorani, Illyrians, and Pecheng sought to change the BT Ethnology—Balkan Peninsula to Balkan peoples. In accordance with the decision about Balkan peoples, the proposals to revise the BT were not approved.

For the headings Albanians; Greeks; and Romanians, the BT Balkan peoples was being added to the BTs already in the record. According to H 1919.5, nationalities have a single BT in the form Ethnology—[place], so the proposals were not approved.

Javaxeti (Georgia)

This proposal to add UFs to the existing heading included a cataloger’s note questioning whether the heading should be established in the name authority file instead. H 405 indicates that current and former jurisdictions, including ancient ones, are established in the name authority file. Research should be done to determine whether Javaxeti is, or was ever, a jurisdiction.  If so, a name authority record should be created and a proposal to cancel the subject heading should be resubmitted. If not, the proposal to add the UFs to the subject heading may be resubmitted, and the proposal should include the research indicating that Javaxeti is a region and was never a jurisdiction.

Kosovans

Headings of this type may be assigned only to works about nationalities outside their native countries. The citation for the work being cataloged should indicate the location of the Kosovans being discussed. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Kuchinoerabu Island (Japan)

A proposal for Kuchinoerabu Island (Japan) (LCCN sh2017000164) was approved on the July 2017 Tentative List. The proposal was not necessary.

Linoleum block printing, Danish

SHM H 202 sec. 1.a(6) states that information supporting the heading from the work being cataloged should be quoted or paraphrased in English, but only a title in Danish was provided. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the proposal to the work being cataloged.

Mongolian provinces

Information that explains the relationship of the work being cataloged to the heading being proposed was provided in a cataloger’s note, but should have been provided in the citation for the work being cataloged. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Nineteen-o-nine, A.D.

H 620 sec. 2.c states that general headings for years should be assigned “only to general works on the time period not limited to specific topics.”  Because the work being cataloged is about Pablo Picasso and his influence on Modernist art, the proposal was not necessary.

Oneida River (N.Y)

GNIS was referenced for this proposal, but the variant names provided there were not cited and proposed as UFs. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Orang Kanaq (Malaysian people)

The proposal was made to change the heading Kanaq (Malaysian people) to Orang Kanaq (Malaysian people) and add the broader term Orang Asli (Malaysian people). The word orang means person or people in the Malay language. Ethnic group headings begin with the significant word, not a generic one, whenever possible. There is some precedent in LCSH for UFs in the form Orang … for Malaysian ethnic groups, so Orang Kanaq (Malaysian people) was added as a UF. Furthermore, the scope of the heading Orang Asli (Malaysian people) is limited to resources that treat the indigenous peoples of Malaya collectively, and is not intended as a broader term for specific ethnic groups of Malaysia. The proposal was not approved.

Pipe Valley (Ariz.)

The river must be established before the river’s valley can be proposed (see H 800 sec. 8). The proposal may be resubmitted with a proposal for the river.

Plas Newydd (Llangollen, Wales)

H 202 states that a citation for the work being cataloged is required for concepts being added to LCSH for the first time, as are citations to additional reference sources as needed. The proposal only included a citation from Wikipedia, which is not generally considered to be authoritative (see H 202 sec. 1.b). The proposal may be resubmitted.

Rezende family

The heading Rezende family (LCCN sh 85113561) already exists in LCSH. The proposal was not necessary.

São João River (Brazil)

This proposal originally appeared on Tentative List 5 (2017), and was marked resubmit. Most of the information requested in the Summary of Decisions for List 5 was provided in the current proposal, but the proposal does not yet include the variant names of the river as provided in Geonet. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Sauquoit Creek (N.Y.)

GNIS was referenced for this proposal, but the variant names found there were not cited and proposed as UFs. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Shlisselʹburg (Russia)—History—Siege, 1702

The locality where a siege took place must be established before the siege itself may be proposed. Shlisselʹburg has not been established. H 405 indicates that military installations that became inactive before 1901 are established in LCSH, while any installation that was active after 1900 is established in the name authority file. Research is needed to determine whether Shlisselʹburg was active into the 20th century. The proposal for the siege may be resubmitted, along with a proposal for the fortress if necessary.

Singers’ spouses

Information that explains the relationship of the work being cataloged to the heading being proposed was provided in the 952, cataloger’s note, field, but should have been provided in the citation for the work being cataloged. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Bosnians; Croats; Czechs; Montenegrins; Polish people; Serbs; Slovaks; Slovenes

These proposals sought to add Slavs, Eastern; Slavs, Western; or Slavs, Southern as a broader term. In LCSH, nationality headings have a broader term in the form Ethnology—[place], so the proposals were not approved.

Tonawanda Creek (N.Y.)

GNIS was cited, but not all of the variant names found there were provided and proposed as UFs in this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Zhiqing

The work being cataloged is the reminiscences of a zhiqing, a high school graduate sent from the city to the countryside during China’s Cultural Revolution. The word zhiqing has also had several other meanings through time, and loosely translates to the generic English phrase “educated youth.” After consultation with an expert on Chinese and much deliberation, the meeting determined that it was not possible to establish an unambiguous heading for this class of persons, in either English or Chinese.

The work may be assigned the name heading for the author along with the heading Down to the countryside movement (China), which was approved on this list. The proposal for the class of persons was not approved.
