CLASSIFICATION

LB1027.34

The classification proposal was not approved in accordance with the decision on the subject proposal Formative assessment. See below under Formative assessment for details.

LG169.A4456

The Synod Higher Secondary School appears to be a high school and should be classified in LG170.A-Z. The proposal was not approved.

LG283.S446

This number is being proposed for a women’s college in Seoul, South Korea. By tradition, cutters for women’s colleges in the LG schedule are not printed. The proposal was not necessary.

LG481.K37

The website for the Federal College of Education, Katsina appears to indicate that it is a teacher’s college. As such, it should be classified in LB2132.A-Z. The proposal was not approved.

LG481.M59; LG481.O96; LG481.W55

The caption for each of these proposed numbers begins with the name of the place in which the university is located. The place names should be established in the name authority file before they are used in captions. The proposals may be resubmitted.

PQ7389.M37

The names literary authors should be established in the NAF before proposals for their literary author numbers are submitted. The proposal may be resubmitted.

PQ7409.M355

The names literary authors should be established in the NAF before proposals for their literary author numbers are submitted. The proposal may be resubmitted.

PT5824.C68

Elisabeth Couperus was not a literary author; she was the wife of a literary author. The work being cataloged is a collection of correspondence by Elisabeth that depicts her lifelong service and dedication to her husband.  It should be classed in PT5825 with the works of her husband, following the general principle in F 275 sec. 4.b, which states, “Treat as individual biography works of the type My life with [a famous person] …  Class such works with the more illustrious person, unless the purpose of the work is clearly to describe the life of the latter, in which case class with the latter.” The proposal was not necessary.

G3464 .B588

This proposal was made for a cutter for the town of Borden, Ontario. It may be resubmitted after the town has been established in the NAF. It also appears that a related proposal for G3464 .B588:2C3 was separated from it. If the two proposals are indeed related, they may be resubmitted together.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Subdivisions to be added to lists of free-floating subdivisions:

                        H 1147, Animals
                                    $x Phenology (May Subd Geog)

                        H 1156, Literatures
                                    $x Garifuna authors

                        H 1195, Land Vehicles
                                    $x Motors $x Exhaust manifolds

Other decisions:

Accomplices

This proposal seeks to add a UF for the concept of complicity to the existing class-of-persons heading Accomplices. Such conflation of concepts and classes of persons is not permitted under current rules for maintaining LCSH. The proposal was not approved.

Allen-Beville House (New York, N.Y.)

According to SHM H 1334, Buildings and Other Structures, sec. 4.a(4), a structure whose name begins with a forename followed by a surname should have a UF that begins with the surname.  The UFs proposed, Benjamin Allen House (New York, N.Y.) and Benjamin P. Allen House (New York, N.Y.), fit this category so there should be another UF, Allen House (New York, N.Y.).  This technical revision would normally be made by the meeting.  However, Allen House (New York, N.Y.) conflicts with a UF for another building that is also in New York City.

H 1334 sec. 3.c addresses this situation by saying that the conflicting entries (in this case the UFs) should be qualified by the names of the streets on which the buildings are located. The street name associated with each building must therefore be proposed and added to the conflicting UFs in each of the records.

This proposal may be submitted with a proposal to revise the record for the Mark W. Allen House and proposals to establish the names of the streets.

Baikeno language; Uab Meto language (Indonesia)

These proposals were made to split the existing heading Timor language into two headings.  A proposal should have been made to cancel the heading Timor language and two proposals for new headings, representing the Baikeno and Uab Meto languages, should have been submitted. See H 193 for details. The proposals may be resubmitted.

Bible stories, Somali

The proposal included English-language information about the work being cataloged, but did not include an indication in English of the language of the work. That is, the citation did not support the qualifier “Somali.” The proposal may be resubmitted.

Bible stories, Vietnamese

The proposal included English-language information about the work being cataloged, but did not include an indication in English of the language of the work. That is, the citation did not support the qualifier “Vietnamese.” The proposal may be resubmitted.

Blue River (Colo. : River)

This proposal was apparently made only to add an additional 670 to the existing record. Proposals should not be made for this purpose. If it is essential to add one or more 670s to an existing record, catalogers in SACO institutions should email [email protected], and LC catalogers should email a PSD subject policy specialist. Citations suggested in that manner will be reviewed and added offlist if appropriate. This proposal was not necessary, and the citation was added offlist.

Cachapoal River Valley (Chile)

The river must be established before the river’s valley can be proposed (see H 800 sec. 8). The proposal may be resubmitted with a proposal for the river.

Colombia—History—Coup d’état, 1854

According to the information provided in the proposal, the coup of 1854 led to a civil war. It is unclear to the meeting why a heading for the coup was proposed instead of one for the war.  If the resource focuses on the war, a heading for the war should be proposed; if the resource focuses on the coup, then the proposal for the coup is appropriate, but information about the focus of the work should be provided in the source citation. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Colombia—History—Insurrection, 1851

The source citations that were provided refer to this this event as a civil war, an attempted coup, and a rebellion.  It is unclear where the cataloger found the wording used in the proposed chronological subdivision. If “insurrection” was found in a reference source, it should be documented. If not, the terminology used in the proposed heading should match terminology actually found in reference sources. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Economic assistance, European—Law and legislation

The information provided in English, “European structural and investment funds management” does not support the subdivision. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Electronic cigarettes—Law and legislation

Only the title of the work being cataloged, “Germany, electronic cigarettes,” was provided, and that title does not support the subdivision. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Environmental stewardship

Forest stewardship is a UF to Forest management because the phrases are so similar in meaning. Following that precedent, this proposal to add a separate heading for Environmental stewardship was not approved. A UF for Environmental stewardship was added to the existing heading Environmental management.

Eruv in art

Only a Hebrew title was provided in support of this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the proposal to the work being cataloged.

Automobiles—Motors—Exhaust manifolds—Fluid dynamics

There is no precedent in LCSH for the use of the subdivision –Fluid dynamics with headings for individual parts of automobile motors, and the meeting does not wish to set one because it is too narrow for a general vocabulary like LCSH. Instead, the heading Automobiles—Motors—Exhaust manifolds (which was approved on this list), may be assigned along with Fluid dynamicsAutomobiles—Motors—Exhaust systems—Fluid dynamics may be resubmitted, if desired, because there is precedent for establishing the subdivision –Fluid dynamics under systems of automobile motors. The proposal Automobiles—Motors—Exhaust manifolds—Fluid dynamics was not approved.

Folk songs, Mingrelian

The English-language information provided in this proposal indicates that the folk songs are Georgian, and the existing heading Folk songs, Georgian can therefore be assigned. If the work is about folk songs in the Mingrelian language, the citation should reflect that fact. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Formative assessment

Formative assessment does not appear to be a new concept, but new branding of the long-standing practice of evaluating students to ensure that they understood the lesson and to determine whether the lesson needs to be presented in a different manner to increase understanding. Depending on the focus of a specific resource, several existing headings can be assigned, including Education—Evaluation; Educational evaluation; Effective teaching; Student-centered learning; and Students, Rating of. The proposal was not approved.

Fort d'Éstrées (Gorée, Senegal)

This fort appears to have been an active military installation until at least 1940, and should therefore be established in the name authority file (see SHM H 405). The proposal was not approved.

Forty-seven Rōnin

This proposal first appeared on List 5 (May 2016), and the Summary of Decisions for that list stated, “The proposal should include information from a source that supports the UF being added to the heading.  The proposal may be resubmitted.” The proposal was resubmitted without the requested edits. The proposal may be resubmitted again.

Gibraltarian essays; Gibraltarian literature; Gibraltar—Literatures

Headings in the form [national or language qualifier] essays all have the scope note “Here are entered collections of essays by several authors,” meaning that headings of this type cannot be assigned to collections by a single person. The work being cataloged is a collection of essays by a single person, and the proposal Gilbraltarian essays was therefore not necessary for the work being cataloged.  Gibraltarian literature and Gibraltar—Literatures were proposed for hierarchy only, so they were also unnecessary.

Inscriptions, Ukrainian

Only the Polish title of the work being cataloged was provided in the citation. An English-language description of the work that explains its relation to the proposed heading should be added to the proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted.

King Arthur’s Labyrinth (Wales)

King Arthur’s Labyrinth is not a cave, as suggested by the BT proposed. Instead, it is a named tour of the disused tunnels of the Braichgoch Slate Mine, during which the guide recounts Arthurian legends. The meeting can find no precedent for establishing individual named tours in LCSH, and does not wish to start that practice. Works on individual tours are generally assigned a headings of the type [place]—Tours, sometimes along with a heading for the type of tour. In accordance with that practice, a heading for the mine itself may be resubmitted, and so can a proposal for Underground tours, if desired.

Male homosexuality in the theater

The work being cataloged is about kabuki, and the information provided in English indicates that kabuki is performed only by male actors. That information does not support the heading proposed, because one cannot assume that a male actor portraying a female is homosexual. Neither does it follow that the practice of males playing females is intended to depict homosexuality. The meeting recognizes that the work may argue that point, in which case the proposal is appropriate, but the relationship of the work being cataloged to the proposal needs to be made more explicit. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Manx literature; Manx literature (English); Isle of Man—Literatures

These proposals appear to have been made only to revise subfield coding. Proposals should notbe made for this purpose. Catalogers in SACO institutions should request changes to subfield coding by emailing [email protected], and LC catalogers should email a PSD subject policy specialist. Revisions suggested in this manner will be reviewed and the records corrected offlist as appropriate. These proposals were not necessary, and the records were revised offlist.

Manx poetry (English)

SHM H 1800 sec 2.b indicates that a collection of poetry by a single author may be assigned a form heading only if it is of a highly specific form. The citation in the record clearly indicates that the work being cataloged is a collection by a single other. Terms from LCDGT and LCGFT may be assigned instead. The proposal was not necessary.

Ostojić family

This proposal does not include English-language information that supports the heading. The supporting information should include the form of the name given in the proposed heading, plus information in English about the nationality, ethnicity, or location of the family (see H 1631 sec. 3.a.).  In addition, the proposal includes three variants that appear to be compound names and should therefore be established separately, following H 1631 sec. 3.b. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Pacific Islander American college students

The citation in the record indicates that the college students being discussed are Pacific Islanders, not that they are Pacific Islander Americans. The proposal may be resubmitted with information that supports the form of heading.

Paštrović family

The citation for the work being cataloged should include the form of the name given in the proposed heading, plus information in English about the nationality, ethnicity, or location of the family (see H 1631 sec. 3.a.).  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Pre-retirees

The proposal cited only titles in which the phrase “pre-retirees” was used, and did not provide a definition. The phrase is highly ambiguous and would therefore be difficult to apply. The existing heading Older people can be assigned along with the free-floating combination Employees—Retirement and/or the free-floating subdivision –Employees—Retirement, which can be used under industries, services, establishments, etc., under names of individual persons, and under names of individual educational institutions and non-governmental corporate bodies. The proposal was not approved.

Repetitive patterns (Decorative arts) in architecture

The work being cataloged is about architecture inspired by Japanese onomatopoeic words, and is sufficiently cataloged with the headings Decoration and ornament, Architectural and Japanese language—Onomatopoeic words. The proposal was not necessary.

Saxophone and vibraphone music

Only the title of the work being cataloged, “Two plus two,” was provided, and it does not show the relationship of the work to the heading being proposed. The proposal may be resubmitted.

School verse, Bruneian (English)

An English-language description of the work being cataloged was provided, but that description does not support the language qualifier.  The language of a collection of literary works cannot be inferred by the language of the title when the country or region from which the literature comes is multilingual. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Short stories, Maltese

An English-language description of the work being cataloged was provided, but it appears in the 952 “cataloger’s comments” field, and not in the 670 for the work. The proposal may be resubmitted after the information is moved to the appropriate place.

Timor (Indonesian and East Timorese people)

The meeting finds itself confused over this proposal. It seeks to change the existing heading Timor (Indonesian people) to the above form, and to add numerous UF references, including Baikeno (Indonesian and East Timorese people) and Uab Meto (Indonesian and East Timorese people).  However, this list also includes proposals to split the heading Timor language into Baikeno language and Uab Meto language (Indonesia). It is possible that two catalogers may choose to approach the situation differently and the proposals could coincidentally appear on the same list, but all of the proposals in this case were submitted by the same cataloger.

Headings for languages and peoples generally parallel each other, unless clear evidence exists that the name of the people is different from the name of the language. The citations in the proposal for the Timor people seem to indicate that Timor (Indonesian people) should be split into two separate headings, similar to what has been proposed for Timor language. The proposal may be resubmitted as a heading split following the instructions in H 193, or it may be resubmitted as a single proposal with clear documentation that the ethnic group should be treated differently from the language.

Vanderbilt Mausoleum (New York, N.Y.)

Tombs and mausoleums of individual families are assigned the subject heading for the family with the free-floating subdivision –Tombs. The proposal was not approved.

Video recording in marine ecology

The citation provided seems to be describing video recording in marine ecosystem management, not video recording in marine ecology in general. The cataloger may want to either reconsider the form of heading or revise the information provided in the citation. A proposal for either Video recording in marine ecology or Video recording in marine ecosystem management may be resubmitted.

White privilege

LCSH does not include specific headings for groups discriminated against. Numerous works about white privilege have been assigned the headings Race discrimination and Whites—Race identity, and the meeting wishes to continue that practice. Other headings such as Whites—Civil rights and Whites—Legal status, laws, etc. may also be appropriate, depending on the nature of the work being cataloged. The proposal was not approved.

Yŏngjong Island (Korea)

Geonet was not cited, as is required by SHM H 690. The proposal may be resubmitted.

MEDIUM OF PERFORMANCETERMS

gusli

The proposal seeks to add the UF krez to the existing heading. The citation provides usage of the word krez, but does not provide any evidence that the gusli and the krez are the same instrument. The proposal may be resubmitted.
