PSD policy specialist responsible for this list: E. Dechman

CLASSIFICATION

BS680. M87

The work cat is about murder in the Old Testament and should be classed in BS1199.M+.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

DT295.4.A-Z; DT295.4.M68

Special topics numbers for topics related to wars do not exist in the D-F schedules unless the war has its own number or array of numbers.  The Algerian Revolution is in an including note at the period 1945-1962.  The work should class in the general works number for the time period, DT295, as has been done with a few other works about the Algerian Revolution that are in LC’s catalog.  The proposals were not approved.

HV8077.3.A-Z; HV8077.3.B8

The meeting felt that an expansion for special topics in this area was not necessary; therefore, HV8077.3 is approved for Gunshot residues including Bullet wipe.  The HV8077.3.A-Z range for special topics and the number HV8077.3.B8 for Bullet wipe were not approved.

N512.A45

According to its Web site (http://theoldjailartcenter.org/#about) the scope of the Old Jail Art Center includes visual and performing arts as well as local history.  The cataloger should consider if the work would be better classed at NX805.A+.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

PA3015.D64

This class number is for dogs in classical literature. The first subject heading assigned is Dogs—Mythology—Greece, which should class in BL795.D+.  The cataloger should either change the order of the subject headings and resubmit this proposal, or resubmit a new class proposal that matches the subject analysis.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

PG5007.2.E84

This work on Czech literature written in exile should be classed in PG5047, the history of Czech literature written outside the Czech Republic.  The proposal was not necessary.

PN6519.T285

This number is for Talysh proverbs, which is the third subject heading assigned.  The class number in the bib is GR291.T35, which matches the first heading.  Either number would have to be proposed.  The cataloger either needs to adjust the order of subject headings and resubmit the existing proposal, or keep the headings as they are and submit a new proposal for the GR number.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Subdivisions to be added to lists of free-floating subdivisions:

                        H 1156, Literatures
                                    $x Bakhtiari authors
                                    $x Korean influences

Other decisions:

Alter Krahnen (Andernach, Germany)

The proposed heading should be MARC tag 110.  Also, a 670 source citation for the work cat. should be included in the proposal.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Andrusia Lake (Minn.)

GNIS was cited, but incompletely because a variant is listed there.  The proposal may be resubmitted with the variant included.

Atomic nuclei

The term “Atomic nuclei” is a UF on the existing heading Nuclear physics.  All of the NTs that are currently listed on Nuclear physics should be examined to determine if they should have their BT changed from Nuclear physics to the new term.  The new term, Atomic nuclei, should be an RT of Nuclear physics, so, a proposal should be submitted to add the RT onto Nuclear physics. The proposal(s) may be resubmitted.

Atomic nuclei--Structure

This proposal may be resubmitted along with the proposal(s) indicated in the discussion of Atomic nuclei above.

Mynydd Bach (Ceredigion, Wales)

The proposal sought to change the heading Bach Mountain (Wales) to Mynydd Bach (Ceredigion, Wales).  The existing qualifier was correct because there is no conflict.  There was also no need to change the substantive part of the heading, because it is formed according to the rules in H 690.  The proposal was not necessary.

Broadway (Shopping center : Bradford, England)

Shopping centers should be established in the name authority file (per H 405, Group One).  The proposal was not approved.

 Child Holocaust survivors

LCSH has no headings of the type [class of persons] Holocaust survivors. Many works have been written about women Holocaust survivors, children Holocaust survivors, etc., in the past eighty years.  Works such as the one being cataloged here are provided with a fairly standard array of headings: Holocaust survivors; Jewish children in the Holocaust; World War, 1939-1945—Children; and Jewish children.  The proposal was not approved.

Christian fiction, Philippine (English)

This proposal was resubmitted from list 1509 (see under Catholic fiction, Philippine (English)).  The cataloger changed the heading as requested and provided information indicating that the work does indeed have Christian themes, but the quotations only partially support the proposal.  A cataloger’s summary indicating the scope of the work should be provided.  The proposal may be resubmitted again.

Coins, Sassanid

The proposal sought to add UFs for variants of “Sassanid,” which are already represented on the heading Sassanids; therefore, the proposal was not necessary.

Embroidery—Japan—History—Meiji period, 1868-1912

The meeting was not able to evaluate this proposal because the source citation included only the Japanese title of the work being cataloged. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Energy-Water-Food nexus

The intent of the term is that there is a point at which issues over energy, water, and food intersect or overlap.  Any number of topics can reach a point at which they overlap or affect one another.  A similar situation was encountered on List 1406 (see under STEM education) where it was noted that although the term is in current use, the “benefits of approving the proposal are outweighed by the problems created by the creation of overlapping headings.” The cataloger should assign the appropriate existing headings.  The proposal was not approved.

Evidence-based education

Evidence-based practice is used in many disciplines, particularly in the social sciences and social work.  It is a methodology for research.  In the case of education, empirical evidence gathered in educational research is used to inform practices in the classroom.

LC has several titles about evidence-based education, and they are all cataloged as Education—Research and/or Education—Research—Methodology.  This is in line with the ERIC Thesaurus, which has the descriptor Evidence Based Practice, categorized as Research and theory.

The meeting feels that assigning Education—Research—Methodology, combined as appropriate with other headings such as Education and state or Effective teaching, would be sufficient for the work being cataloged.  The proposal was not approved.

Fishes—Olfaction

The long-standing practice in LCSH for identification of senses in animals is to post-coordinate headings for [animal]—Physiology and/or [animal]—Behavior with a heading for the particular sense such as Smell.  The existing practice will be retained.  The proposal was not approved.

Forced singing

The concept is that in concentration camps during the Holocaust, inmates were forced to sing German songs, but the proposed heading could be related to any person or group who is required to sing.  Also, the phrase “forced singing” could be interpreted musically as forcing the voice out of its comfort zone (loudness or range) while singing.

Headings for the Holocaust, particular concentration camp(s) if appropriate, and Singing can be assigned for the work being cataloged. The proposal provided scanty information, so, it is impossible to know if the forced singing was considered to be a type of forced labor.  If it is, the heading Forced labor could also be assigned; or, if it was a form of punishment, Punishment can be assigned.

The proposal was not approved.

Grand Lake (Mich. : Lake)

There are other lakes of this name in Michigan listed in GNIS, but they were not noted in the proposal.  The qualifier in the proposed heading should be adjusted.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Holodomor Memorial (Washington, D.C.)

The proposal did not provide any information to indicate that this memorial is indeed in Washington, D.C.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Howard Buford Recreation Area (Or.)

An identical heading was approved in June (sh2015001030).  This proposal was not necessary.

Loktak Lake Watershed (India)

Only the title of the work being cataloged was given, and it does not bear an obvious relationship to the proposal.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Ithai Barrage (India)

There is no information in the 670s that indicates where the Ithai Barrage is.  The cataloger also might want to investigate updating the existing heading Barrages, because it is used in an obscure way (to most people, barrages are military events).   The proposal may be resubmitted.

Love poetry, Kurdish

This proposal was resubmitted from List 1511. The information as requested has been provided, but the new information seems to indicate that the heading needed is Romance fiction, Kurdish, not Love poetry, Kurdish.  The proposal may be resubmitted again.

Muirfield Gate (Gullane, Scotland)

This proposal was resubmitted from List 1510, but the information requested at that time--support for the BT--was not provided.  The proposed heading uses the term “gate,” but the broader term chosen was Dwellings, and information confirming that Muirfield Gate is a dwelling is provided nowhere in the proposal.   The proposal may be resubmitted again.

Propp family

Information from the work cat about the nationality, ethnicity, or location of the family should be provided.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Proverbs, Western Pahari

The meeting was not able to evaluate this proposal because the source citation included only the Western Pahari title of the work being cataloged. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Puerto Rico—History—Taino Indian Rebellion, 1511

The cataloger provided no evidence that this event has a formal name.  The event is characterized in running text as a rebellion, but a formal name might call it an insurrection or a revolt instead of a rebellion.  The cataloger should provide evidence based on further research.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Rare vascular plants

Established LCSH practice considers “vascular plants” synonymous with “plants,” and the practice will be retained.  A UF Vascular plants will be added to the existing heading Plants.  Headings such as Rare plants or Endangered plants should be assigned to the work being cataloged.  The proposal was not approved.

Reuss family

The proposal sought to make an RT link between the existing heading Reuss family and the new heading Reuss, House of.  H 370 prohibits making an RT for two terms that begin with the same word or word stem.  The proposal was not approved.

Sports trading

The term “sports trading” is used to indicate a combination of both sports betting and book-making, but the meeting feels that the term is vague and subject to misinterpretation. A UF Sports trading (Sports betting) will be added to the existing heading Sports betting, and a UF Sports trading (Book-making) will be added to the existing heading Book-making (Betting).  The proposal was not approved.

Streltsy

Streltsy appears to be a named military unit, and as such it should be established in the name authority file.  The proposal was not approved.

Tanka Splendor Award; Mirrors International Tanka Award

Earlier/later names are not established separately in LCSH as they are in names. The earlier name should be a UF on the heading for the later name.  Also, information about the geographic reach of the prize should be provided in the 670s.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Villains

The only supporting information provided is the title, which translates to “Heroes and villains.”  LCSH contains several headings for Villains in [art, literature, etc.] but this proposal could be simply cataloging by title.  Evidence should be provided that the work is about persons who practice villainy in general.  If the heading is really needed, the cataloger should consider what the relationship between Villains and the existing headings Brigands and robbers; Thieves; Rogues and vagabonds, etc., should be.  The proposal may be resubmitted.
