CLASSIFICATION

[DL538-547] and related proposals

The work being cataloged discusses memorials of the July 22, 2011 shootings in Norway.  It seems preferable to class this under the time period for King Harald V instead of creating a new number for the 21st century.  The proposal was not approved.

TX344

The work being cataloged is a monographic history of a society. CSM F 225 sec. 2 states that if societies are classed in the same number(s) as periodicals, then both monographs and serials about a society are classed in the periodicals number. This proposal for separate number for monographs was not approved.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Ajatado (African people)

The sources cited indicate that Ajatado is a collective appellation for several groups of African people.  Some of those groups are established in LCSH and should be NTs of Ajatado (African people).  The proposal may be resubmitted along with proposals to adjust the references on the related headings.

Anise drinks

There is no precedent in LCSH for collective headings reflecting specific spices used as flavorings in drinks, and the meeting did not want to begin one. The proposal was not approved.

Authors, Hindko

The word Hindko in this proposal refers to an ethnic group that has not yet been established in LCSH.  The proposal may be resubmitted along with a proposal for the ethnic group.

Automobile driving—Passing—Aerodynamics

The meeting prefers that the aerodynamics of vehicles passing each other be brought out by the assignment of two headings:  Automobiles—Aerodynamics and Automobile driving—Passing.  The proposal was not approved.

Cagar Alam Teluk (Indonesia)

There was not information provided in the record to support the choice of National parks and reserves—Indonesia as the BT.  In addition, H 1925 sec. 1.b should be consulted and the UFs adjusted to conform to those instructions.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Chemography

The Oxford Dictionary of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology defines chemography as “an artefact in autoradiography due either to the creation of reduced crystals in the photographic emulsion by chemicals present in the specimen (positive chemography), or to the removal of latent images, also by chemicals in the specimen (negative chemography).”  Chemography in photography should therefore be distinguished from chemography in biochemistry.  In addition, the Wikipedia citation is not sufficient to justify the revision to the heading.  The proposal may be resubmitted with additional research.

Cruise ship passengers

The work, which is about measures taken to secure passengers’ safety, is adequately cataloged with the headings Cruise ships—Security measures—Evaluation and Cruise lines—Security measures—Evaluation.  The proposal was not necessary.

Dazhbog (Slavic deity)

Headings for deities should be established in the name authority file using RDA instructions (see the announcement in the Summary of Decisions, Editorial Meeting 13/08).  The proposal was not approved.

Devil May Cry (Game)

The version of Devil May Cry being cataloged is for Microsoft 360 and Sony Playstation 3. It appears that that version may have been titled DmC: Devil May Cry. Research should be done to confirm that, and the proposed heading adjusted accordingly. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Dibble family

This proposal was made to cancel the existing heading on the basis that Dibble and its variants may be considered variants of the Theobald family.  Theobald is a German and English name, while Dibble is a purely English derivative of Tebald or Tibalt.  A clear distinction can be drawn between the names, so the meeting prefers to retain both headings. The proposal was not approved.

Ewyas Lacy (England)

Ewyas Lacy was a hundred (a unit of county administration) in England. Historic jurisdictions are established in the name authority file. The proposal was not approved.

Fredensborg Slot (Fredericksborg, Denmark)

The sources cited do not indicate the location of the palace, but a quick search on the Internet shows that it is most likely located in Fredensborg, not Fredericksborg.  Fredensborg must be established in the name authority file. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Gel bracelets

The work being cataloged is about the use of silicon in passive sampling devices and is adequately cataloged with headings such as Silicon polymers, Environmental sampling, and Chemical detectors. The proposal was not necessary.

Herbicide-resistant crops

According to the Penn State Extension website, herbicide resistance is caused by tolerance selection and genetic engineering techniques. Therefore, not all herbicide resistance is due to genetic engineering, and the proposed BT, Transgenic plants, is inappropriate. The proposal was not approved.

Zeus (Greek deity)—Childhood

The subdivision –Childhood is not free-floating, but regardless, the subdivisions used under classes of persons are not free-floating under names of individual deities (see the background statement in H 1110). This heading must therefore be retained, and the coding adjusted. The proposal to cancel the heading was not approved.

Meriam language

The sources cited in the record provide several variant names for this language and should be UFs.  In addition, there should be a BT in the form Languages—[place], in which the place is the country where the language is spoken.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Music—Philosophy and aesthetics

This proposal was made to add an SA reference to the existing heading. General see also references are made when a subdivision is free-floating, to explain the application of the subdivision, and to refer to categories of name headings (H 371). This proposal does not fit any of those categories and was not approved.

Novi Zrin (Croatia)

The information provided did not indicate when this fort was an active military installation.  Military installations that became inactive before 1900 are established as subjects, while those that were active after 1900 are established in the name authority file (H 405). The proposal may be resubmitted.

Stanley Meadow Roman Villa Site (England)

The phrase chosen for the heading is not supported by the citations provided. The proposal may be resubmitted.

STEM (Education)

There is no precedent in LCSH for headings that combine the teaching of separate, but related disciplines. The meeting realizes that “STEM” is a term in current use. However, the benefits of approving the proposal are outweighed by the problems created by the creation of overlapping headings. The proposal was not approved.

Umpiring (Military science)

The citations provided indicated the outcome of umpiring in the military context, but did not define umpiring itself. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Ustaše

The meeting would prefer to collocate works about the fascist Ustaša movement in Croatia with other works on fascism by assigning the heading Fascism—Croatia. An authority record for Fascism—Croatia will be created with a UF from Ustaša (the singular form of the word).  If desired, the corporate name heading Ustaša, hrvatska revolucionarna organizacija may also be assigned to the work being cataloged.  The proposal was not approved.

GENRE/FORM TERMS

Treaty commentaries

The meeting does not wish to set a precedent of establishing terms in the form [legal form] commentaries, and instead prefers that the more general term Law commentaries be assigned.  The scope note for Law commentaries will be adjusted accordingly and will read: This heading is used as a genre/form heading for works that include systematic, article-by-article or section-by-section interpretation, analysis, and explanation of a legal document or collection of legal documents.  The proposal was not approved.
