September 16, 2013

PSD policy specialist responsible for this list: L. Dechman

CLASSIFICATION

B128.W84-.W844

The person for whom this number was proposed, Yubi Wu (1391-1469), is a Confucianist.  The work being cataloged should be classed in BL1875.W83, which is the number that has been used for him in the past.  The proposal was not approved.

B4805.F59-.F594

The person for whom this number was proposed, Pavel Floss, is a historian of philosophy, not a philosopher.  The work being cataloged should be classed in B51.6.A-Z.  The proposal was not approved.

BM538.T73

Traffic regulations are not a usual topic of theological discourse. The translated subtitle of the work being cataloged is: “law of preserving life on the road: legal discussion, legal decision, facts and teachings, responsa from leading scholars and legal deciders.”  For those reasons, the meeting feels that the work being cataloged should probably class in KBM3448.  The proposal was not approved.

F72.C3

Marstons Mills is a village in the town of Barnstable, which is the county seat of Barnstable County.  The proposal seeks to add the village of Marstons Mills to the including note for Barnstable County.  However, the work should be classed with the town of Barnstable in F74.B+.  The proposal was not approved.

LB1029.D48

See the discussion of the subject proposal for Dialogic teaching below.  The proposal was not approved.

PA5610.K6675

The number that has been used for this author, Giōrgēs Kotsiras, is PA5622.O87, and the meeting chose to continue using that number.  Kotsiras began publishing as early as 1959, but the note at 1961-2000 states, "Class here authors who started to publish about 1950 and flourished after 1960."  Kotsiras fits well into this publication date range.  The proposal was not approved.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Announcements

Proposals to cancel subject headings for individual fictitious and legendary characters, individual deities and mythological figures, and individual animals with proper names

As these headings are established in the name authority file, the corresponding subject authority records (if any) should be submitted for deletion. See the Summary of Decisions, 13/08, August 19, 2013, and SHM H 193.5, for instructions on the procedure for deleting a subject heading.

Several proposals of this type appeared on this list with an inappropriate cancellation note. SHM H 193.5 provides standard wording for the cancellation notes and instructions on their use. For example, when the heading Bean (Fictitious character : Card) is being cancelled in favor of the name heading Bean (Fictitious character from Card), the note that should be used is:  “This authority record has been deleted because the subject heading is covered by the name heading Bean (Fictitious character from Card) (no2013075580).”  This note should be used because the headings are not identical.  The note that states “…the subject heading is covered by an identical name heading…” should be used only if the headings are actually identical (with the exception of the MARC coding). Failure to use the appropriate note has the potential of confusing the transition of these headings from subjects to names.

Subdivisions to be added to lists of free-floating subdivisions:

H 1158, Materials
$x Radioactive contamination [May Subd Geog]
Not valid under headings for individual materials and groups of materials that are inherently radioactive.

Other decisions:

Azerbaijan, Northwest

The proposal cites only non-English data, from the work being cataloged only.  SHM H 760, sec. 1.e.6, states:  "Establish named region headings of the type [name of continent, country, state, province, etc.], Northern, [Southern, Central, etc.] only if the region in question is well-defined and generally recognized by that name in English-language reference sources ....  Do not establish such headings based on use of the designation in one item. ”  The proposal may be resubmitted with citations to English-language reference source(s).

Black Caviar (Race horse)

Names of horses and other animals with proper names should be established in the name authority file.  The proposal was not approved.

Bordelli, Inspector (Fictitious character)

The name of this character has been established in the name authority file.  The proposal was not approved.

Chilcotin language

This proposal for Chilcotin language contains a classification number that has not been proposed.  The proposal for the language heading may be resubmitted along with a proposal for the classification number.

Freight trains

The heading Railroad trains is used for works about freight and passenger trains treated together, and for works about freight trains specifically. On works about freight trains the heading Railroad trains is assigned, often postcoordinated with the heading Railroads--Freight.  The term Freight trains will be added as a UF on Railroad trains.  The proposal was not approved.

Dialogic teaching

Educators sometimes dress up old concepts with new vocabulary and call them pedagogical innovations.  However, "dialogic teaching" is an “inquiry-based” method of education, which is a broadened, holistic, and interactive approach to the traditional question-and-answer format of teaching.  The meeting has determined that the concept of “dialogic teaching” is covered by the existing heading Inquiry-based learning, and the work being cataloged should class in LB1576.  The proposal was not approved.

Fire prevention

This proposal seeks to eliminate the instruction for the use of the subdivision --Prevention and control under particular types of fires (e.g., Forest fires--Prevention and control, Wild fires--Prevention and control) from the general see also note.  The meeting feels that the instruction in the note should be retained.  The proposal was not approved.

Fors, Malin (Fictitious character)

The name of this character has been established in the name authority file.  The proposal was not approved.

Green alder sawfly

The green alder sawfly is a member of the genus Monsoma, which should be the BT on this heading.  The proposal lists Sawflies as the BT, however, Sawflies is one of the intermediate categories established because it is considered particularly helpful or warranted by common usage (see SHM H 1332, Background).  The heading Sawflies represents several taxonomic families including Tenthredinidae of which Monsoma is a genus. The existing heading Tenthredinidae already has Sawflies as a BT; therefore, it is not necessary for the heading Green alder sawfly to have the BT Sawflies.

SHM H 1332, Background, states that the BT reference from a heading at the next higher level along the hierarchy of species-genus-family-order-class-phylum is always established even if it means establishing a heading for which no work has been cataloged.  A heading for the genus Monsoma should be proposed to be used as the BT on this heading.  The proposal may be resubmitted along with a proposal for Monsoma.

K'snis xeoba (Georgia)

According to GeoNet, the name of this valley is based on the name of a river.  SHM H 800, sec. 8 states: “If the river is not yet established, establish a heading for the river at the same time.”  The river needs to be established, and the valley should be proposed as instructed in SHM H 800, sec. 8.  The proposal along with a proposal for the river may be resubmitted.

Linna, Joona (Fictitious character)

The name of this character should be established in the name authority file.  The proposal was not approved.

Mani pills--Religious aspects; Mani pills--Religious aspects--Buddhism, [Christianity, etc.]

The subject Mani pills is inherently religious, and is unique to Buddhism.  Therefore, these proposals were not necessary.  The proposals were not approved.

Maori (New Zealand people)--Fishing--Law and legislation

The form of the proposed heading indicates that the subject is the law of fishing imposed by the Maori, not New Zealand law of Maori fishing rights.  The work being cataloged seems to be about New Zealand law of Maori fishing rights, for which the subject headings Fishery law and legislation--New Zealand would be postcoordinated with Maori (New Zealand people)--Fishing.  The proposal may be resubmitted if desired.

Mortensen (Fictitious character : Jakobsen)

The name of this character should be established in the name authority file.  The proposal was not approved.

Oxenholme Hounds, England

The proposal represents the name of a hunting club.  Therefore, the heading should be established in the name authority file.  The proposal was not approved.

Palamedes (Greek mythology) in literature

Headings for mythological characters, which are eligible to be established in the name authority file as this one has been, may use the free-floating construction [mythological character name]--In literature.  The proposal was not approved.

Prose poems, Sindhi

The work being cataloged appears to be a collective biography, but the bibliographic record does not include this heading.  The proposed heading should be used on a bibliographic record.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Samba schools

Typically, schools that teach a particular style of dance have headings such as [style of dance]--Study and teaching postcoordinated with the heading Dance schools. The meeting prefers to continue this practice.  The proposal was not approved.

Sir Archy (Race horse)

Names of horses and other animals with proper names should be established in the name authority file.  The proposal was not approved.

Tempietto del Santo Sepolcro (Florence, Italy)

Tombs of individual persons or families should be assigned headings of the type [name of person]--Tombs; or, [name of family]--Tombs, which are free-floating pattern constructions. The heading Rucellai family--Tombs should be assigned instead.  The proposal was not approved.

Zanzibaris

Zanzibar is an island in Tanzania; therefore, Zanzibari is not a nationality.  Additionally, the term Zanzibaris does not represent an ethnic group; it is merely a name for all of the people who live on Zanzibar.  The proposal was not approved.

Zeppelin-Staaken aircraft

Zeppelin-Staaken only made bombers. The heading for the bombers is Staaken bombers, and has a UF from the hyphenate form.  The proposal for Zeppelin-Staaken aircraft was not approved.
