January 16, 2012

PSD policy specialist responsible for this list: L. Dechman

Classification

B809.145

See discussion below of the subject proposal for Contrastivism (Philosophy).  The classification proposal may be resubmitted along with the proposal for the subject heading.

BS1186.3

In the classification schedule, the note above BS1143 states that the philosophy of the Old Testament should be classified at BS645.  The proposal was not approved.

DT582.45.B4

This proposal may be resubmitted along with a proposal for a subject heading covering the people group.

Subject Headings

Subdivision reminder:

Free-Floating Subdivision Authority Records are created by the Policy and Standards Division (PSD) and do not appear on lists ordinarily.  If a new free-floating subdivision is desired, SACO libraries should contact COOP staff at saco@loc.gov.  LC catalogers should contact the policy specialist responsible for the discipline.

Other decisions:

Anti-Jewish films; Anti-Jewish propaganda

Anti-Semitism is a UF on the heading Antisemitism, therefore these references are not necessary.  The proposals were not approved.

Architecture--Thailand--Western influences

Since the heading Architecture may be subdivided geographically, and the heading Architecture--Western influences has been established, it is not necessary to establish each use of a geographic subdivision of the type Architecture--[place]--Western influences. See SHM H 870 for instructions on interposition of geographic subdivisions.

Athletes with mental disabilities

This proposal was created to provide a BTfor the proposal Autistic athletes.  Following the pattern used for Blind athletes and Deaf athletes, the meeting feels the BT Athletes with disabilities is sufficient without introducing an additional level of hierarchy to identify the type of disability. Therefore, the heading Athletes with mental disabilities is not needed.  The proposal was not approved.

Bus lines

The heading Bus lines is used for the companies that run the buses, therefore, the proposed UFs are not appropriate. A UF Routes of travel will be added onto the existing heading Bus travel following the established pattern of UFs on Air travel, Ocean travel, and Railroad travel.  The proposal was not approved.

Clergy and mass media

The work is about the depiction of clergy in mass media, not the effect that one has on the other.  A proposal for Clergy in mass media may be resubmitted.

Cleves get

A get is a divorce decree.  The work appears to be about the controversy created by this particular decree.  A subject heading for the particular decree would not be established in the subject authority file.  Headings such as Divorce suits (Jewish law), Divorce (Jewish law), or Get (Jewish law) may be used instead.  The proposal was not approved.

Contrastivism (Philosophy)

An explanation of what is meant by “contrastivism” was not provided.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Cultural identity

The 670s state that cultural identity is identifying oneself by ethnic, national, language, religious, or gender group.  It is not clear how the concept of “cultural identity” is different from Group identity, which is established with the UFs Social identity, Collective identity, and Community identity.  The existing heading Ethnicity and the free-floating subdivisions --Ethnic identity and --Race identity may also be used.  The proposal was not approved.

Diasporas

There are a dozen or more individual diasporas established, and all of them should be NTs to this heading.  The proposal may be resubmitted along with proposals for the appropriate changes to the other diaspora headings.

Diasporas in literature

This heading is withdrawn and will be re-entered on a list when the proposal Diasporas is resubmitted.

Dragsters

Automobiles has a UF Cars (Automobiles).  Since the UF already exists on the basic heading, it is not necessary to add it to Dragsters.  The proposal was not approved.

Episodic memory

It is difficult to distinguish between the meaning of Episodic memory and the meanings of the existing headings Semantic memory and Autobiographical memory. A scope note should be added to this proposal to clarify the distinction between these concepts.  The proposal may be resubmitted along with proposals for appropriate changes to the headings Semantic memory and/or Autobiographical memory.

Feeling-of-knowing

The meeting feels that the meaning of this heading would be too vague to be useful for cataloging purposes.  The proposal was not approved.

Five-star (Pa. and Va. : Basketball camp)

This appears to be a business, not a geographic place.  There are Five-Star Basketball Camp sites all over the country.  A heading for this business should be established in the name authority file (SHM H 405, Group 1), and a proposal to cancel the existing subject heading Five-star Basketball Camp should be resubmitted.

Folk Islam

Folk Islam is the incorporation of local beliefs and practices into Islam.  Incorporation of local beliefs and practices into religion is widespread in all of the major worldwide religions.  The concept has been represented in bib records by the post-coordination of Folk religion—[place] with the religion or religious concept (e.g., Hindu gods; Christianity—Peru).  For the work being cataloged, headings such as Folk religion—Sudan; Folk religion—Tanzania; Islam—Sudan; Islam—Tanzania may be assigned.  The proposal was not approved.

Folk music--Netherlands

This heading represents a free-floating combination for which a proposal was not necessary.

France. Armee--History; France. Armee--History--Indochinese War, 1946-1954; France. Armee--History--Napoleonic Wars, 1800-1815

These headings represent free-floating combinations for which proposals were not necessary (see SHM H 1159).

French; German

The meeting does not wish to begin the practice of adding a UF in the form “[heading] nationals” to every heading of this type.  Also, a scope is not necessary unless there could be confusion about the heading (e.g., Nigerians; Nigeriens; Congolese (Brazzaville); Congolese (Democratic Republic); Guineans; Guineans (Guinea-Bissauans)).  A scope note for Botswanans was recently approved to disambiguate the term “Batswana.”  There is a scope note on Americans, which the meeting decided should be an exception.  The proposals were not approved.

Friendship Centre movement

This is not a social movement.  Friendship Centres are Native American cultural centers in Canada that offer a group of programs covered by existing headings such as, Indians of North America--Services for--Canada; and Social work with Indians--Canada. The proposal was not approved.

Funerary sculpture

It is difficult to distinguish between this heading and the existing headings Sepulchral monuments and Effigies. The proposal may be resubmitted with a scope note that shows the relationship between this heading and existing headings.

Hungarian drama--21st century; Hungarian drama--21st century--History and criticism; Drama--21st century--History and criticism

These headings represent free-floating combinations for which proposals were not necessary (see SHM H 1156).

Hydropsyche arinale

The SHM H 1332 background statement states that in LCSH a BT is always created for a heading at the next higher level along the hierarchy of species-genus-family-order-class-phylum even if it means establishing a heading for which no work has been cataloged.  The genus Hydropsyche has not been established, therefore, the proposal for the species Hydropsyche arinale may be resubmitted along with a proposal for the genus.

Igneous petrology

Petrology is the study of rocks.  Therefore, the UFs Igneous rocks--Petrology and Igneous petrology will be added to the heading Igneous rocks.  The proposal was not approved.

Iliushin IL-4 (Bomber)

This proposal combines two different models of bomber.  Two separate proposals may be resubmitted.

Implicit cognition

The SHM H 202 sec. 3 instructs that for terms that are unfamiliar, a definition should be submitted with the supporting information for the heading.  Further, the relationship between the heading and existing headings should be explained, so that catalogers will be able to judge which heading to apply.  The term “implicit cognition” should be defined and the relationship between the term and other terms of cognition should be explained.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Intimate partners of transgender people

LCSH does not have a pattern of headings for “Intimate partners of [group]," and the meeting does not wish to begin the practice.  Existing headings such as Couples, Spouses, Unmarried couples, etc. may be post-coordinated with Transgender people.  The proposal was not approved.

Jacobian matrix

According to Wolfram MathWorld, the existing heading Jacobians is the same as Jacobian matrix, therefore, a UF Jacobian matrix will be added to the existing heading.  The proposal was not approved.

Japi Mountains (Brazil)

This proposal was submitted with an 053 field for a classification number that is neither existing nor proposed.  A proposal should have been submitted for the classification number.  The subject proposal for Japi Mountains (Brazil) may be resubmitted along with the classification proposal.

Ka-27 (Helicopter)

This proposal conflates four different models. It seems as if the existing heading Kamov helicopters could be assigned on the work being cataloged, however, if headings for all four models are desired, then proposals for each may be resubmitted.

LEED for Neighborhood Development

The LEED certification program, which is represented by the existing heading Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Green Building Rating System, has several components, including homes, neighborhood development, commercial interiors, core and shell, new construction, and schools, health care, retail.  The meeting does not choose to set a precedent of establishing a separate heading for each component.  Instead the existing heading for the program may be post-coordinated with existing headings for the component topics, e.g., City planning; Planned communities; Church buildings; Community development, Urban, etc.  The proposal was not approved.

Lesbian neighborhoods; Gay neighborhoods

LCSH includes headings for four ethnic neighborhoods, African American, Hispanic American, and Jewish neighborhoods, and Chinatowns.  The meeting does not choose to begin establishing headings for neighborhoods other than ethnic neighborhoods.  The proposals were not approved.

Lincoln Air Force Base (Neb.)

This proposal is for a military installation established after 1900, active until 1966, which should be established in the name authority file (see SHM H405, Group one).  The proposal was not approved.

LNER W1 No. 10000 (Steam locomotive)

It is unclear if this proposal is referring to a model or a class of locomotives. If the 10000 was one of two or more locomotives of a class, then there should be two headings, one for the class and one for the locomotive. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Macomona; Macomona liliana

There is an existing heading Macoma, which is also a bivalve in the same family. Further research should be cited on the proposal to verify that the two headings are named similarly but do not represent the same genus.  The proposals may be resubmitted.

Madungandi Reserve (Panama)

This proposal represents an Indian reservation that is also a comarca.  Some comarcas are jurisdictional and some are not, but all comarcas should be established in the name authority file (per SHM H 760 sec. 1.e.3. and H 405 Group 1).  In order to retain a clear distinction, the meeting feels that this heading should be considered a Group 1 name.  The proposal was not approved.

Makhuwa-Meetto language

Ethnologue was cited for this proposal, but half of the citation was omitted.  This language is also spoken in Tanzania, and has approximately eight more variant names there.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Mexico City Metropolitan Area (Mexico)

SHM H 790 sec. 1.a. states, “construct free-floating headings for names of metropolitan areas by inserting the phrase Metropolitan Area between an established city name and its geographic qualifier.”  Therefore, the proposal was not necessary.

Missionaries

This proposal was created to add a UF Indigenous missionaries to the heading Missionaries.  It is unclear what is meant by the term “indigenous missionaries” (missionaries who are indigenous people, or, missionaries who go to indigenous people).  In addition to this ambiguity, the proposed reference is an upward reference, therefore, the proposal was not approved.

Mountain passes--China

This proposal was not necessary.

Ontario, South Central

According to SHM H 760 sec. 1.e.6, regions with directional qualifiers are established only when they are well-defined and generally recognized in English-language reference sources.  This region is not in Encyclopedia Britannica, Columbia Gazetteer, Merriam-Webster’s, or Geonet.  Two maps were provided that depict a region that each calls “south central Ontario,” but the counties do not overlap completely.  The work cataloged does not appear to use the phrase (it gives a list of counties in the title, but not the name of the region), and the counties covered are only about half of South Central Ontario. Further research in authoritative sources should be cited.  The proposal may be resubmitted .

Pacific halibut industry

This proposal originally appeared on Weekly List 1115.  The Summary of Decisions for that list states: “The meeting feels that existing headings for larger groups of fish (e.g., Halibut industry, Herring industry, Salmon industry, Sardine industry, etc.) are preferable to establishment of industry headings for single species.  The larger group heading may be assigned along with a heading for the individual species if desired.  The proposal was not approved.”

Roadside stands

The meeting feels that there is little difference between this concept and the existing heading Vending stands, therefore, a UF Roadside stands will be added to Vending stands.  The proposal was not approved.

Robotic sailing

The action of sailing is the same whether navigation is performed by a human or by a robot.  The existing heading Sailing may be assigned instead.  The proposal was not approved.

Sarching ’83 Site (Germany); Sarching ‘89/90 Site (Germany)

The numbers in the headings refer to the date a particular portion of the site was excavated, therefore, two separate headings are not needed.  Sarching Site (Germany) is sufficient.  The first heading will be changed to Sarching Site (Germany), and the second heading was not necessary.

Film festival programming

This concept is expressed by the free-floating construction:  Film festivals--Planning.  The proposal was not approved.

Strategic intent

The concepts of strategic intent and strategic planning are so close in meaning that the meeting feels that a separate heading would not be justified.  Therefore, a UF Strategic intent will be added to the existing heading Strategic planning.  The proposal was not approved.

Survivors’ writings

The meaning of  “survivors” is ambiguous because of the citations to the works being cataloged.  The first work cat is apparently about animals that have survived extreme conditions, therefore, this heading would not be appropriate to assign. An online description, translated, of the second work cat lists survival after social exclusion, exile, wars, concentration camps, and genocide.  In addition, LCSH already includes headings for the writings of Holocaust survivors and children of Holocaust survivors, which could easily be confused with this heading.  Therefore, the meeting believes that the heading is too vague, particularly in light of Shoah terminology, which uses the term Survivors for survivors of the Holocaust.  The proposal was not approved.

Teenagers’ writings, Hungarian

This proposal was submitted with an 053 field for a classification number that is neither existing nor proposed.  A proposal should be submitted for the classification number.  The proposal for Teenagers’ writings, Hungarian may be resubmitted along with the classification proposal.

Texas, Southeast

According to SHM H 760, sec. 1.e.6, regions with directional qualifiers are established only when they are well-defined and generally recognized in English-language reference sources.  This region is not recognized in Encyclopedia Britannica or Columbia Gazetteer. Further research in authoritative sources should be cited. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Tragedy (Philosophy)

This heading originally appeared on Weekly List 1119.  The Summary of Decisions for that list states: “The existing heading Tragic, The has been used for works on the philosophical aspects of tragedy, and the meeting wishes to continue this practice.  The proposal was not approved.”

GENRE/FORM TERMS

Digital gazetteers

Digital gazetteers contain the same data as in print gazetteers.  There is a term for digital maps because many digital maps are stored as coordinate and raster and vector data, and created on the fly by the computer when needed.  That situation is different from making an online searchable database of textual information, therefore, the proposal was not approved.
