PSD policy specialist responsible for this list: L. Dechman

CLASSIFICATION

LG51.H54

Works about the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology should be classed in T173 per the note at the beginning of the LG schedule: “For individual institutions limited to education in a special field, see the topic.”  The proposal was not approved.

ND3375.C56

ND3375.A-Z is is for manuscript names, not for names of individuals (Erazm Ciolek) .  There is no manuscript name access point in the bib. record for the proposal.  A proposal for the name of the manuscript may be resubmitted.

PA8520.F8425

Ancient authors writing non-fiction in Latin are often classed in PA. Only literary authors should class in the PA8001-8595 range for Medieval and modern Latin literature.  Medieval and modern non-fiction in Latin classes with the subject.  This book seems to be a non-fiction account of a blue robe supposedly worn by Christ that was in Hungary, went to Cologne, then ended up elsewhere.  Such relics usually class in BT587.A-Z, and the name of the relic should be proposed.  The proposal was not approved.

PN56.H47

The meeting felt that combining the classification of Heroines with the classification for Heroes is preferable.  Therefore, the caption for Heroes (PN56.H45) will be changed to “Heroes. Heroines.”  The proposal was not approved.

PN1583.5

There are already four works with the first heading Entertainers--Anecdotes classed in PN1583 in the database.  Only one other place in the schedule, PN2217, divides anecdotes from "real" biography.  The meeting believes that the work being cataloged should be classified in PN1583.  The proposal was not approved.

P-PZ20 34.J68

Works about journalists should be classed in the appropriate section of Journalism in PN.  See the discussion below regarding the proposal for the subject heading Journalists as authorsThe proposal was not approved.

Announcement:

In order to expedite printing of the KZ schedule, a new number range KZ1215-1216 was added off-list.  This new range of numbers is for Trials before the International Criminal Court (ICC).  Several cross-references were also added to refer to this number range.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Subdivisions to be added to lists of free-floating subdivisions:

H 1159, Military srvces (approved on List 25)
$x Non-commissioned officers

Other decisions:

Abagadasset Point (Me.)

There are six variants in GNIS, which was not cited as required.  The proposal including a citation from GNIS and UFs for the variants listed there may be resubmitted.

Access to justice

The meaning of this phrase appears to be extremely close, if not identical, to the meaning of the existing heading Due process of law, therefore, Access to justice will be added as a UF on the record for Due process of law.  The proposal was not approved.

Collaborative law

The Uniform Collaborative Law Act has a definition that is basically identical to the LCSH definition of Dispute resolution (Law), therefore, a UF Collaborative law will be added to the existing heading Dispute resolution (Law).  The proposal was not approved.

Airship accidents

The work being cataloged is about the Hindenburg.  There are 34 bib records in the database with the subject heading Airships postcoordinated with Accidents.  Almost all, if not all, of them are about the Hindenburg.  There was no BFM sent.  Postcoordination has been an effective method of describing the situation for nearly a century, so the meeting feels that adding Airship accidents at this time is unnecessary.  The corporate heading for the Hindenburg, along with Accidents or Airships and Accidents may be assigned instead.  The proposal was not approved.

Akun Island (Alaska)

There are several variants in GNIS, which were not recorded in the GNIS citation.  The proposal including UFs for the variants listed in GNIS may be resubmitted.

Anglo-Leasing Scandal, Kenya, 1897-2002

This proposal needs to be supported as follows: 1) the scandal name is not documented by sources cited; 2) there is no justification for the date range--opening date 1997(?), and the scandal seems to be ongoing in Kenya; 3) the first two BTs do not seem appropriate as the scandal does not involve banks--it is about the Kenyan government leasing passport security equipment.  The scandal seems to involve the leasing agent being a non-existent company, who was awarded the contract even though a much lower bid was made from another company.  Presumably, the fraudulently obtained money was put in a bank, and then the money was frozen during the investigation, but that seems to be the extent of bank involvement.
The proposal may be resubmitted.

Animal-assisted therapy

The meaning of this heading is identical to the meaning of the existing heading Animals--Therapeutic use, therefore, the UFs Animal-assisted therapy and AAT (Animal-assisted therapy) will be added to the existing heading.  The proposal was not approved.

Arts, Finno-Ugric

The inverted qualifier used with Arts should represent a nationality or an ethnic group, but Finno-Ugric is a language group.  A heading such as Arts--[place] could be used instead.  The proposal was not approved.

Beach erosion

The scope note says "Works on coast changes resulting from erosion or other causes are entered under Coast changes," so these UFs will be added to the existing heading Coast changes.  The proposal was not approved.

Classes A1 and A3 (Steam locomotives : Gresley)

Headings for classes of locomotives, models of airplanes, etc., refer to one class or model, not two.  There should either be two separate headings or, if they are the same thing but have two names, one should be chosen for the heading and the other should be a UF.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Costumed characters

It seems as if this heading covers a huge variety of characters, from mascots to advertising characters to theme park wanderers.  “Costumed characters” also might be people dressing up for Halloween or Mardi Gras, or actors in a play.  The meeting feels that the heading is too vague and could be misapplied too easily.  Existing headings, including Advertising characters, Mascots, etc. may be used instead.  The proposal was not approved.

Cyber intelligence

The meeting believes that this heading should have a qualifier that identifies it as an “intelligence service,” or as “artificial intelligence”, etc.  Also, a scope note should be added to differentiate Cyber intelligence from the existing heading Electronic intelligence.  The meeting recommends that, while examining a reciprocal scope note for the two headings, perhaps the proposing institution could clarify the scope note for Electronic intelligence as well.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Discrimination in adoption

LCSH does not have an existing pattern for [topic] in adoption, and the meeting does not wish to begin the practice.  The existing heading Discrimination may be postcoordinated with the heading Adoption instead.  The proposal was not approved.

Emir Saltuk Kümbeti (Erzurum, Turkey)

For the tomb of an individual, named for that individual, a heading of the type [name of person]--Tomb, which is a free-floating construction, should be assigned.  The proposal was not approved.

European letters--Renaissance, 1450-1600--History and criticism

This is a free-floating combination (see SHM H 1156).  The proposal was not necessary.

Homophobia in the military--Law and legislation

The meeting believes that assigning headings for the [name of the group]--Civil rights or [name of the group]--Legal status, laws, etc., such as Gay military personnel--Civil rights or Gay military personnel--Legal status, laws, etc., would be preferable to beginning a pattern of establishing headings for every prejudice affecting specific groups in the military as narrower terms under Military law.  The proposal was not approved.

Journalists as authors

Journalists are authors.  The heading Journalists is an NT of Authors.  The proposal was not approved.

LexisNexis CaseMap (Information retrieval system)

This is the name of a specific computer program, which should be established in the name authority file.  The proposal was not approved.

Lezgic languages

Six of the nine languages in this group are in LCSH and need to have their BTs adjusted.  The proposal may be resubmitted along with proposals to change the other headings in the group.

Local foods; Locavores

This change was not approved on WL 1050.  Since the words start with the same root, the RTs are not permitted.  The proposal was not approved.

Mangalā (Blessings)

While “mangala” has a special meaning in Buddhism, the term “mangala” appears to be just a translation of the English word "blessings."   The proposal was not approved.

Marathi (Indic people)

The Marathi are established as:  Maratha (Indic people).  A proposal to add a UF, or change the heading, may be resubmitted.  If the heading is changed, proposals should be submitted to change all of the dependent headings also.

Market Hall (Blackburn, England)

Markets should be established in the name authority file (SHM H 405, Group 1).  The proposal was not approved.

MERCOSUR countries

LCSH does not include geographic region headings for countries comprising regional organizations (SHM H 760, sec. 1.e.4).  The proposal was not approved.

Molesworth family

A heading for this family name already exists (sh2011003447).  The variants on this proposal will be added to the existing record.  The proposal was not necessary.

National school lunch program

The meeting believes that use of the initialism in the UF is incidental, not widely used, and is therefore unnecessary.  The proposal was not approved.

New Fort Niagara (N.Y.)

This fort was deactivated by the Army in 1963 and it is still used by the Coast Guard.  All military installations that are established after 1899, and all that are active, are established in the name authority file (SHM H 405, Group 1).  The proposal was not approved.

IS-2 (Tank); IS (Tank)

The very nature of the proposals makes it clear that there is more than one model of IS tank, which means that IS (Tank) should have a plural qualifier.  Also, the form of the UFs on the IS (Tank) proposal should be corrected.  The proposals may be resubmitted.

Pappus’ theorem

Wolfram Mathworld (http://mathworld.wolfram.com/PappussTheorem.html ) states: “There are several theorems that generally are known by the generic name "Pappus's Theorem." They include Pappus’s centroid theorem, the Pappus chain, Pappus’s harmonic theorem, and Pappus’s hexagon theorem.”
The proposing institution should make it clear which of Pappus’ theorems the heading represents.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Pčinja River (Serbia and Macedonia)

GEOnet lists variants, however GEOnet was not cited as required.  The proposal including a citation from GEOnet and UFs for the variants listed there may be resubmitted.

Philosophy critics

People who write about philosophy are ordinarily known as Philosophers.  The proposal was not approved.

Rawlance family

According to American family names (Hanks, 2003), Rawlance is a variant of Ryland.  The appropriate UF will be added to Ryland family. The proposal was not approved.

Robins Island (N.Y.)

The citation from GNIS omits other variants that should be cited and added as UFs. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Social realism in the arts

The heading Social realism is defined as an artistic style, therefore, the proposed heading Social realism in the arts would be redundant.  The proposal was not approved.

Songs in motion pictures

This heading would be for the depiction of songs in motion pictures. The meeting believes that the desired heading would be Motion picture music--History and criticism.  The proposal was not approved.

Ustrushana

Ustrushana is a medieval jurisdiction (the citation from Wikipedia makes this clear), so the subject heading should be cancelled from LCSH, and Ustrushana should be established in the name authority file.  The proposal was not approved.

Vindication; Vindication in literature

The meeting feels that these headings are not necessary for the work being cataloged.  The subject headings: Historiography--Methodology; and, Mexico--Historiography; could be used instead, and the work could be classed in D13. The proposals were not approved.

Voltaire nu (Sculpture)

This sculpture is an individual work of art, and as such, should be established in the name authority file as has been recommended in previous minutes (00/34, 01/16, 08/17, 09/28, and 11/24).  The proposal was not approved.

Voodoo music

The meeting feels that the spelling “Vodou” simply represents the French spelling of the word.  If there is another reason for changing the heading, the proposal should state it clearly, and all of the other headings that contain the word “Voodoo” should be evaluated.  The proposal was not approved.

Water conflict

The meeting believes that the existing headings Water rights and Water rights (International law) cover this concept adequately.  The proposal was not approved.

Water supply--Treaties

The subdivision --Treaties is used under ethnic groups and individual wars, not under topical headings.  The headings may be postcoordinated.  The proposal was not approved.

Yawalapiti Indians

The classification number in the 053 has not been proposed as it should be because it is in a topical cutter list.  The proposal may be resubmitted with a classification  proposal.

Announcement:

Qualification of geographic features

According to SHM H 810 sec. 1.b, if there are two or more geographic entities of the same type and with the same name in the same jurisdiction, a distinctive qualifier is created by adding a qualifier for the next smaller jurisdiction (county, department, province, etc.).

For features in the United States, the standard qualifier is the state in which the feature is located, and conflict can usually be satisfactorily resolved by adding the county name to the qualifier.  The meeting has determined that features in the United States should be differentiated to the county level only.  Therefore, in the case of multiple geographic entities of the same name and type within a single U.S. county, a single heading will be used.  The heading will be considered undifferentiated.  A 667 field should be added to such proposals, formulated as:

667 ## $a Undifferentiated geographic heading.  Covers all [type of feature] named [name of feature] in [county].

Example:
151 ## $a Lookout Mountain (Whatcom County, Wash.)
667 ## $a Undifferentiated geographic heading.  Covers all mountains named Lookout Mountain in Whatcom County, Wash.

SHM H 810 will be updated to reflect this clarification of existing practice.  Existing headings will be updated as time and staff resources permit.

GENRE/FORM TERMS

Dogme films

This proposal represents distinctions that are too fine to be practical for cataloging purposes.  The meeting recommends assigning Experimental films instead.  The proposal was not approved.

Film mini-series

Mini-series is a term used in television, not in film. The genre/form term Film series was cancelled on the basis that it is not a genre or form.  It would be contradictory to approve Film mini-series.  The proposal was not approved.

Vigilante television programs

Vigilantes appear in television programs of many genres, including action and adventure, western, war, and superhero programs.  Similarly, a proposal for Vigilante films was not approved on Tentative List 11/25.  Existing genre/form terms may be assigned, post-coordinated with subject headings such as Vigilantes—Drama and Revenge—Drama.
