Back to Summary of Decisions

September 26, 2007

Present from CPSO: P. Weiss, K. Griffiths, R. Goudreau, D. Thompson, R. Robboy

Classification

PL56.9.R37

"e.g." has been added below the caption at PL56.9.A-Z. Since this is a twentieth-century author, this proposal is not necessary (see the Subject Cataloging Manual: Classification, F 632, sec. 3).

PT7073.D48

This genre would more appropriately be established under "Prose and prose fiction" at PT7083. However, because of the small amount of material classed in that number, it is not broken down by individual genres. General works as well as individual genres are classed in the single number. The proposal was not approved.

Subject Headings

Subdivisions to be added to lists of free-floating subdivisions:

H 1120, Families

$x Health

H 1180, Plants & crops

$x Silica content (May Subd Geog)

Other decisions:

Banu Hizzan (Arab tribe)

Further research is required in ethnology sources to determine whether there is a more commonly used English form of name for this group, since the only authority cited was the item being cataloged. Since the word "Banu" means group, clan, or tribe, it is not usually included in headings for Arab tribes. Instead, a UF incorporating that term is normally made. The appropriate BT is Ethnology--Saudi Arabia. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Double bass with plucked instrument ensemble; Songs with oud

These proposals are not necessary. See the Subject Cataloging Manual: Subject Headings, H 250.

Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)--Religious aspects; Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)--Religious aspects--Buddhism, [Christianity, etc.]

It appears that this topic may be covered by the existing headings Holocaust (Christian theology) and Holocaust (Jewish theology). If those headings are inadequate in their present form, this proposal may be resubmitted together with proposals to change those headings to Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)--Religious aspects--Christianity and Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)--Religious aspects--Judaism.

Refugees, Cuban

The heading Refugees has been qualified only by adjectives designating non-national ethnic groups. National groups are brought out by dividing the heading by place, in this case Refugees--Cuba. The proposal was not approved.

Summit Creek (Utah County, Utah)

It is unclear why a proposal was submitted to change this heading to Summit Creek (Utah County, Utah : River). If there is another type of entity in Utah County, Utah called Summit Creek that would require the addition of the word River to the qualifier, such as a city or town, the proposal may be resubmitted with an explanation and supporting citations.

Sweetheart Abbey (New Abbey, Scotland)

Abbeys are on the list of entities that are established as name headings (see the Subject Cataloging Manual: Subject Headings, H 405, Group 1). The proposal to establish this abbey as a subject heading was not approved.

Tetramorph in art

Since the tetramorph is an inherently artistic concept, the heading Tetramorph (Christian art) is sufficient for the item being cataloged. An additional heading for the concept in art is not needed. The proposal was not approved.
